The 2009 Ghostbusters game did a similar thing. Proton Pack heat and player life were all cleverly placed lights on the pack. You didn't even need to equip the PKE meter in hand to use it, as it dangled on your belt, the lights respond accordingly depending on where your 3rd person perspective crosshairs pointed, only needed to equip the meter and goggles to actually 'scan' something.
