I do supply backpack and grenade launcher, and hoover up every supply drop, and blast grenades like they're machine gun bullets.

[–] camr_on@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (2 children)

So far so all I've done with the grenade launcher is kill myself and sometimes my teammate

I was fighting the automatons at fairly close range and managed to blow myself up when my grenade bounced on their armor straight back to me. That’s when I learned that the autocannon works way better for the automatons.

If you click really fast the recoil will save you from yourself.

A buddy of mine realized a fun thing. If you, say, want to main autocannon, recoilless, or have any of the assistant backpacks, equipping the resupply pack stratagem is still good as a secondary resupply.

You pick it up, resupply yourself, maybe a few teammates, then just drop it for your main BP and move on.

It's kinda obvious but it was huge for us when we connected the dots.

Dumb question, how do you supply yourself? Can't you only wear one of those backpacks at once?

[–] JayDee@lemmy.ml 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

You drop your main backpack, pick up the supply pack, and you hit 5. That pulls from your supply pack. Then you just pick your main backpack back up.

[–] Boinkage@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (2 children)

But does that replenish the autocannon rounds in the backpack you dropped?

[–] Nommer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 months ago

Yeah I'm confused. I don't think it'll refill backpacks you're not wearing.

[–] JayDee@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

Yeah, it won't replenish a backpack you're not wearing.

I have seen so many supply backpacks and I have never received supplies from one of those packpacks.

In fact, I am usually fighting to get loose ammo before the ones with the supply backpacks take it and don't give me anything.

People that take more than their fair share of ammo from the resupplies are a special sort of bastard.

When I was under level 15, I called in resupplies, often away from the other 3, way more than I should have. I didn't know they were shared.

I also rushed the core objectives and called in extract while the other 3 were doing side objectives more times that I'd care to admit. I didn't know how important the side objectives are.

I get the learning curve there (exacerbated by the fact that I don't voicechat), so I am patient, mostly with under lvl 15s.

What keeps happening to me that I absolutely cannot stand is dying from friendly grenades and airstrikes. And Arc Throwers. So many lvl 35+ people murdering me with Ark Throwers aimed at Chargers when I am trying to flamethrow them...

I don't mean to sound like I'm blaming you for getting TK'd, but it sounds like maybe you may need to defensively reposition yourself in firefights. Not necessarily in relation to your enemies, but in relation to your teammates. If you see they're using a lot of AOE weapons, you'll probably want to make sure you're not standing downrange of them. This also means making sure you don't allow enemies to get too close, as aggro'd enemies will always attract fire in their direction - usually from well-intentioned Helldivers trying to "save" you from a Hunter... with an EAT.

I find it's a good idea, in general, not to cluster up too closely to your teammates either (as this makes it easier for a swarm to wipe you all at once), so make sure you're giving your teammates a moderately wide berth at all times. I don't have any exact measurement, but in general I want it so that if I'm looking straight into the horizon, that my teammates are far enough away that their feet are in the top third of my screen or higher; I know where they are and what they're doing and can provide cover fire if they're getting into a hairy situation, and I've got a safe distance where a stray grenade isn't as likely to insta-gib me.

I try to always maintain a pretty wide "bubble" around me during engagements, where I don't allow enemies or friendlies inside. If I can't keep my bubble clear, I backpedal until it is. It's definitely slower and there's not as much bravado to playing this way, but it keeps you alive.

It's all kinda like riding a motorcycle; you can be doing everything correctly, but the biggest danger to you will always be the other people on the road with you. Never trust that the other drivers know how to use their mirrors, and never trust that your fellow Helldivers know what "splash damage" means.

Also, this may seem counter-intuitive, but if you're using quickplay, I suggest going up in difficulty. Generally, the players on the higher difficulties are a bit more experienced and have a better game-sense. It's pretty rare that I get TK'd at 6 or above, but if I hop into a level 3 quickplay lobby because I'm bored and feel like helping some newbies farm up some samples, I find that I'm way more likely to die to friendly fire than anything else.

I mean, I hear you, and when I get the sound que, I look around and generally run.

I also don't throw eagles and orbitals at my teammates.

When I die, it's because I'm crowd controlling or flamethrower biggies, and someone threw an eagle or orbital at me.

I also crutch on the jump pack. Which is an issue, but have a shortened 500kg dropped literally on the charger I am flamethrower, and fuck the dude who did that.

Edit: also, to be clear, try hard is something that just isn't in me. I stick mostly to Challenging mode. So ya, I accept that I'm also playing with people who aren't tryharding.

Just seems common sense to know when your stratagem is gonna tk someone after the first time you make that mistake... unless you are intentionally griefing.

This is why I go with Sickle + Laser Cannon as my main quickplay build. I usually find enough stims and grenades laying out in the world to keep enough supply to get through entire missions without ever touching a resupply pack. In fact, I'm usually the one watching my team's inventory icons and calling resupplies when I see them running low. I'd rather let the randoms in my lobbies stay stocked up.

You know, I almost made this meme be about using laser weapons and saving resources for the team. But in the end, it wasn't as concise and understandable to fit in a few short words. So good on you for being a team player. I'm sure Sydney Sweeney would look at you the same way.
