The French Wars of Religion (1562-1598) were a series of eight conflicts between Protestant and Catholic factions in France lasting 36 years, The fighting ended in 1598 when Henry of Navarre, who had converted to Catholicism in 1593, was proclaimed Henry IV of France and issued the Edict of Nantes, which granted substantial rights and freedoms to the Huguenots. However, Catholics continued to have a hostile opinion of Protestants in general and of Henry, and his assassination in 1610 triggered a fresh round of Huguenot rebellions in the 1620s.

Tensions had been rising between Protestants and Catholics since 1534 but the religious and political situation worsened after Henry II (r. 1547-1559) died from an injury. His son, Francois II (Francis II, r. 1559-1560), crowned king at the age of 15, had been married to Mary, Queen of Scots (l. 1542-1587) who was the niece of Francis, Duke of Guise (l. 1519-1563) and his brother Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (l. 1524-1574). Although Francis II was of age to rule on his own, his mother, Catherine de ‘Medici (l. 1519-1589) encouraged the Guise brothers to assume control as Francis II was inexperienced and sickly.

The House of Guise, devoutly Catholic, then exercised the power behind the throne and were hostile to the efforts of the Huguenots (French Protestants) who were advancing their vision in France. In March 1560, a group of Huguenots tried to kidnap Francis II to remove him from the influence of the Guise brothers. The plot, known as the Amboise Conspiracy, was discovered and anyone thought to be involved, as well as over 1,000 other Huguenots, were executed. In retaliation, Huguenots began vandalizing Catholic churches and rising tensions led to the Massacre of Vassy in March of 1562, in which Catholics killed more Protestants, starting the first war.

Conflict continued, with periods of armed peace between hostilities, until 1598 when King Henry IV, recognizing that France would never accept a Protestant king, converted to Catholicism (allegedly, with the famous line, “Paris is well worth a Mass”). His Edict of Nantes (1598), granting rights to Protestants in France while maintaining Catholic sovereignty, ended the French Wars of Religion (which had cost approximately 4 million lives) but did not address the underlying tensions which continued to erupt throughout the next century.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to find covid safe events?

My partner has long covid symptoms from our first time having it so we’re really trying to make sure we don’t catch it again, which means we’ve been mostly locked up the last year.

Ugh it's been a long time since I've felt this way in the morning but i'm feeling that nausea and inability to eat and like I'm going to throw up that I used to feel before work and I really wanna call out and go back to bed but it's probably because I let myself stay up until 5am drinking too much so I'd feel like a huge asshole burdening others because of it

I came across a pawn in Dragon's Dogma 2 that was Kabru from Dungeon Meshi. My brain immediately went "ah, you can edit eyes individually in the character creator, I know what you are". And wouldn't you know it, the pawn's Arisen is called Mithrun. I don't know what it says about me that I made the connection in like half a second.

Funny, I recently read all about the besom for no reason, and then coming here I see our comrade in the side bar is sweeping the world with a besom broom. I wonder if the artist had a specific reason for using this implement versus others or if that was just the type in common use at the time. Someone should update it with a power washer.

The meta-game of planning out district placements to maximize adjacency in civ VI is so much fun. The government and policy card system as well. This version didn't have the same level of post-expansion re-evaluation that V got, but IMO it's the best of the series now.

I just saw a video that said one of the themes of Evangelion was "existentialism." That's not right, right? Thematically, Evangelion isn't really about searching for meaning in a meaningless world, it's about loneliness and human relationships. Am I wrong for thinking that's wrong?

Maybe this is a minority opinion here but I just couldn’t stand the Netflix 3 body problem. Normally I’m fine with mediocre Netflix slop but having watched the Tencent version it’s almost unwatchable for me. I know everyone thinks it drags but I like the pacing. The foreign actors weren’t that great but it was still a good series. The Netflix Anglofication treatment that still tried to have one foot in China felt incredibly awkward.

The Tencent series also perfectly captures the 2008 Beijing vibe which I’m personally a fan of so there’s that. There’s also an esoteric difference that I can’t really put into words.

Tencent felt like a treat but the Netflix version just feels like standard prestige TV. I just think China does drama better in general.

On my second rewatch and noticed that in the first CR scene (I don’t have a problem with it, as the dialogue pretty much replicated the book dialogue) one of the banners said “Down with Soviet Revisionist Imperialism” lol when it should have been “Down with Capitalism”. They didn’t even dare to write an anti-capitalist banner.

Having said that, only someone who can read Chinese would catch that, so the vast majority of the Western audience would never notice it.

I think i autopiloted my way out of a victory in civ lol. I started shift entering waiting for a victory screen and didnt realize that cultural victory might be out of reach and didn't bother pivoting. It's one of those games where I was so far ahead in everything I didn't bother planning a victory condition (well I'm Ludwig so I was planning cultural).

Maybe I should bump up the difficulty and play more focused.
