Democrats should have been talking about packing the court with liberals all the way back to when the Supreme Court stole the election from Gore.

Republicans are out there staging insurrections in order to gain power. Meanwhile, Democrats won't even explore these legal means of stopping them. It's insane.

There are good people who are democrats, for sure.

But the Democratic party is managed opposition. They love that republicans do stuff that benefits them personally, and they love that they can fundraise on the culture war stuff, and they love that no matter how bad they fail, they can blame republicans.

The party as an organization is one of the worst enemies of progress, because it sucks up resources as if it will do something, but then turns around and spends all the money on their safe seats.

If either side attempts to pack the court to their political ends by increasing the number of justices it simply guarantees the other party will do the exact same when they come into power.

So what? Let's keep it going make the Supreme Court 50 people for all I care. It would still be better than the corrupt assholes right now. There only being 9 makes corruption so much easier.

It's much easier to pay off 2 judges than 25.

Uh but Republicans already did that anyway. So what?

Unless you're still holding a grudge against the Grant administration I'd recommend you re-read my comment. The number of judges has remained unchanged since 1869 because the last time one party decided to change that it lead to the two changing the number back and forth and resulted in some of the worst supreme court rulings in this nation's history.

We're already getting pretty horrible rulings. Whats to lose?

The playlist is in reverse order for me.

Is the guys name Sheldon Whitehouse?! I'd that even allowed?

I don't know this guy but now I want him to be president just to say Whitehouse's Whitehouse.

I refuse to believe that he is a real person. 1000% fake

He's got a pretty interesting podcast about the supreme court, called Making the Case. Been listening to the first couple episodes, it's kinda dry but informative as hell

That's great, podcasts are better for long-form informative content like this. Or books.

[–] Nobody@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

He's exactly right. Everything happening with the Court now has been in the works since the Powell Memo in 1971. Weaponize the judiciary to serve business interests. The culture war stuff that grabs headlines is a side effect.
