Fun fact, Verhoeven purposefully sought out attractive but shitty actors, soap opera rejects etc., as a joke.

Also, take a look at all of the adult characters, they look pretty messed up.

I sincerely don't think Casper ever got the joke or understood the point of the movie. He did several sequels and seems thrilled about playing Johnny to this day. basically perfect casting.

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 74 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I met Casper once at a convention and he very much knows what the films are about. Dude gets to participate in media critical of fascism and have fun doing it, nothing wrong with that.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 48 points 8 months ago

Oh that's good to hear. I'm glad I was wrong.

[–] SSJ2Marx@hexbear.net 62 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I think that's just because he likes the work. In the director's commentary he talks a bit about the themes and seems to know what was going on.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 36 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Glad to be wrong on this one. : )

[–] IzyaKatzmann@hexbear.net 29 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Appreciate the candour and humbleness you exhibit, definitely a model to emulate

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 13 points 8 months ago

I had to work on being able to be wrong, and it's still a daily struggle. It's worth it, though. I think, or i hope, it helps me avoid things like retrenching my beliefs when confronted with evidence that contradicts my beliefs.

if I wasn't supposed to side with the bugs then why do they look so badass?

"what'cha thinking about?~"

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I am sooooo over all the "you're being reported for treason!" Shit in the subreddit. I want to talk about how cool the game is but everyone on reddit, no surprise, is a jerk.

[–] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 6 points 8 months ago

It's a subreddit for a game that exploded and got a ton of media coverage, and it's got that Starship Troopers discourse on top of it. Frankly I'm shocked that it's not even worse.

That said, the image I posted was the funniest fucking response to someone talking about how the entire war is a false flag I've ever seen and I immediately saved it for repeated usage elsewhere.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 46 points 8 months ago (2 children)

You are, though. They show the bugs being tortured and at the end Doogie Howser, SS, drags the brain bug out of it's home and tells everyone that it's terrified of all these monkeys who just invaded it's home and murdered all it's friends.

[–] whoops@hexbear.net 24 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Add to that the fact that the bugs never did anything to instigate the violence. They were invaded by psychotic settlers who glass the planet and then send in jarheads to kill all your babies.

Again, slinging asteroids from that distance is literally impossible, especially for a lifeform that ostensibly isn't intelligent.

Buenos Aires was an inside job 9/11

[–] 420blazeit69@hexbear.net 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I think it's less that slinging asteroids from across the galaxy is impossible -- the bugs may well have some sort of FTL travel as they exist in multiple star systems -- and more that a society as militarized as the one in Starship Troopers would have intercepted it easily.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 12 points 8 months ago

Yeah, my interpretation is that the Feredation, being a bunch of fascist twits, didn't act to intercept the asteroid. And then, since you never let a good disaster go to waste, they blamed it on the bugs and just piled on propaganda to silence anyone who pointed out how silly and impossible that is.

Later on they show the big space artillery guns that can destroy asteroids, sort of a cya thing.

Do you think the Klendathu sequence where the Arachnid's surface to orbit planetary defense batteries are shredding the federation space ships should be viewed as part of the propaganda, or a more "real" sequence that shows all the fascist bravado and machismo breaking down. Like they're now facing the enemy for real, and shocked to find out that their enemy isn't as weak and pathetic as they believed. Same with the actual ground battle, where you see the propaganda camera crew get shredded. I wonder if that should be viewed as part of the framing narrative propaganda video, or as a place where the fascism beliefs break down when confronted with reaity.

Chuds and libs have one braincell between them which they fight over, making it impossible to ever analyse anything, including their treats.

[–] GeorgeZBush@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago

Discourse on media recently (re)discovered by zoomers is so insufferable.

[–] idkmybffjoeysteel@hexbear.net 15 points 8 months ago

The soyjack in the movie is supposed to be NPH.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 13 points 8 months ago

Have CHUDs looked in the mirror? Or is that why they all gloat about being IRL captain planet villains?

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 10 points 8 months ago

Here let me explain it to you in terms you can understand, the bad guys are soyjaks, the good guys are gigachad nordic gamers, the girls, sorry BABES, are tfw trad bf gfs with big mommy milkers. Make sense? Good.

[–] rubpoll@hexbear.net 10 points 8 months ago (1 children)

In Elden Ring lore threads, I've noticed an odd number of men commenting that a team of women assassins slaying golden boy Godwyn must have been difficult for them because of how gorgeous and attractive Godwyn was. That they had to fight their instincts, surely, to slay such a perfect male specimen.

A lot of men seem to think they're reducing their odds of being assassinated by female contract killers by working out, not to fight off the attack, but to look too attractive for her to kill...

I blame James Bond movies.
