(Real talk though is there a Lemmy best practice for posting gifs or other gif-alike?)

/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!
Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.
~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.
~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.
~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.
~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.
~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.
~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.
~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'
~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.
Fun will now commence.

I have no clue and I've been searching for options
A few recommendations around Lemmy pointed out that you can upload whole MP4 or WEBM to Imgur where they are converted to high quality GIF .... it's not actually a conversion as the video more or less stays as WEBM format and it's just given an GIF file name ... whatever happens, the video is hosted on Imgur and can be shared
Another recommendation was to upload Webm format videos to Catbox
So far, in the two little tests I just did ... Imgur seems to run faster ... while Catbox does present the video but it takes a lot of buffering and loading before it will appear properly.
In both attempts, the thumbnail and preview doesn't work and on both the PC based Lemmy website or on the app (I use Sync) the thumbnail doesn't work ... I also tried on Jerboa and the link handling of the video is not easy
So far from the little bit I did tonight ... formating a quick MP4 or WEBM on just a general video editor (I'm using Kdenlive) and then editing a ten second WEBM will generate a decent 5MB video file that is easily uploaded to Imgur ... Imgur then "converts" it to GIF without any quality loss (because there was never any actual conversion) ... then posting the Imgur link works decently enough.
The only platform I've come across that actually works well on the Lemmy website and on most apps is Tenor ... but it is a real pain and a guessing game as to how to upload content there and make it stick .. I think there is a lot of human approval for uploaded videos because anything I've sent there either takes a long time to approve (a day or two) or it is not approved at all and deleted.
Otherwise .... video clips on Lemmy is still not easy
Thanks for the detailed response! I’ll have to take a peek at Tenor and see if it’s better than just fiddling with Imgur.
