It seems like the vast majority of SOTA AI models rn are being pumped out by 3 companies: Microsoft/OpenAI, Google/DeepMind, and Meta(sometimes).
This makes sense as DL right now is a black box, which leads to the main factors that determine a model's efficacy being the amount of data available as well as the number of parameters. And improvement in these areas is highly paywalled.
What worries me is the increasing tendency for these companies to refrain from releasing their model parameters and put them behind some pay-per-use API.
We are all thinking that AGI will revolutionize the world and lead to some great utopia, but it feels like if a company ever does develop a highly intelligent AI, they can just use it to further capitalistic inequality.
How do we know that AI development will actually lead us to a utopia and not another version of the US healthcare system, where billionaires foster massive inequality and block all "open-source content"?
