I'm loving all the replies pointing out their clown makeup.

Why did they make a public post about this? Surely they would just send notices to the relevant parties?

[–] neshura@bookwormstory.social 34 points 8 months ago

they smoked their own supply is how. The management team ate the legal departments bs about how they are fighting a righteous cause here.

[–] conciselyverbose@kbin.social 58 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Nintendo can't get emulators that actually are for the primary purpose of bypassing their restrictions (even if doing so on legitimately purchased games is perfectly legal) shut down, and this company thinks they can close a fucking reader because it's possible some people might use it with pirated copies of their IP?🤣

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

They can and they will because the dev team caved.

In regards to the forks though. We'll see if they get a computer literate judge or not.

[–] conciselyverbose@kbin.social 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Harassing specific devs may mean those devs don't push back, but being open source means anyone else hosting it can trivially counter claim bullshit DMCA nonsense.

It doesn't take any tech literacy. There's no infringement and precedent out the ass that things far closer to the line are legal. There's no need for a novel interpretation of anything. The project doesn't contain their IP.

It's using a plugin system for various sources, basically it's just a fancier front end for the source websites. it is not hosting its own (illegal) content.

[–] ardi62@lemmy.wtf 26 points 8 months ago

yeah, it is like suing a qbittorrent

[–] spiderman@ani.social 4 points 8 months ago

yeah, they are trying to sue tachi since most of plugins were tachi's own plugins. idk what the copyrights holders are going to do now since the unofficial plugins are out.

[–] neshura@bookwormstory.social 38 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Nope they are only using API's from the various hosting sources. That's what makes this request so blatantly fraudulent. For all intents and purposes Tachiyomi is just a Browser specialized for Manga

[–] MomoTimeToDie@sh.itjust.works 11 points 8 months ago (2 children)

But don't worry, the tachi devs genuinely consider the mass bs dmca spam from kakao to be entirely good faith and legitimate

Does this really matter as things stand now? The team behind Tachiyomi said they won't support website extensions anymore, meaning Kakao got exactly what they wanted

[–] TheFederatedPipe@kbin.social 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

To my understanding, they are still supporting plugins, it's just they won't provide the list of apps, you should be able to add your own repository of plugins to download, in fact, there are some going around.

[–] SkullHex2@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

That's awesome, thanks for the heads up

BRB, let me go create another fork.

[–] Ozy@lemmy.world 45 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Actually insane the extens these fucking idiots go to. Not only do they provide sub-par services, they also ask high amounts of money in return.

What if I didn't know English, are they going to translate X manhwa in my native language like the groups do? No? Well boo hoo they are actively hurting the popularity of artists instead of helping them.

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 13 points 8 months ago

They even threatened manhwa readers

[–] ardi60@reddthat.com 40 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Saikou already DMCAd last year and Dantotsu is reborn. Now, tachiyomi is next target. it will be like whack a mole game.

[–] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 8 points 8 months ago

Is there anything left of Saikou? I've been keeping it on Obtainium waiting for a potential rebirth

(Btw, tangentially related, anyone knows if there is any fork named "Saikope"? I've had that app installed for a long time and I don't even remember where I got it anymore)

[–] 0range0281@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 8 months ago

They literally said straight up that tachiyomi was a virus in their past post. Cant make this shit up

[–] CaptainBasculin@lemmy.ml 35 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Each of these sites Tachiyomi uses are compliant with DMCA. Not taking it down on them and instead crippling Tachiyomi is literally the worst action to do.

[–] ardi60@reddthat.com 11 points 8 months ago

Yeah, there was past incident that Saikou already DMCAd last year and Dantotsu is reborn. Suppose tachiyomi goes this way. that will be rough journey.

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 24 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Fuck kakao 🖕

[–] Throbbing_Banjo@midwest.social 23 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Anyone have any context here? No idea what I'm looking at

[–] neshura@bookwormstory.social 48 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Kakao nuked the official Tachiyomi Extension repo because they "infringe on their copyright".

The Extension repo does not and never has offered copyrighted material, it merely facilitated access to sites that do within Tachiyomi. Essentially it was a collection of hyper specific Browsers. The repo is gone, the extensions are not (they are now in a different repo provided by a user). Tachiyomi itself allows for 3rd party repos now and everyone is mad at Kakao for making the App less usable.

[–] JustARaccoon@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

A bit longer than that. Kakao went after tachiyomi for a number of extensions, the biggest ones being mangadex and bato.to. the Tachiyomi team took the plugins down without fighting back. A day later they announced they're taking down the plugin repo effective immediately, likely out of fear of future action but it also could've been discussed behind closed doors with the Kakao team - we don't know. Now Kakao is trying to sue the entire app, all of its developers and anyone who's forked it on GitHub for infringing copyright.

[–] Deceptichum@kbin.social 36 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Korean company went after a manga reader type app with some sketch DCMA claims. Now they’ve saying they’re going to pursue legal action against 100 forks of the app.

Corpos being fuckwits and going after open source software that can be used to pirate manga/manwha/etc

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 21 points 8 months ago

Great so now I'm gonna get sued because I forked tachiyomi? Fuck off

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 17 points 8 months ago

Bunch o' fuckwits trying to make themselves sound like damned war heroes

[–] ReluctantZen@feddit.nl 17 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Tapas sucks. If you want me to buy your stuff, please at least actually sell it to me on Kindle or Kobo instead of making me use a shitty coin system

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 18 points 8 months ago

Not only Tapas, it's like every manhwa publisher

from r/manhwa

[–] yamanii@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Already did the repo thing for tachiyomi, but what about anyiomi?

[–] imagoodmushroom@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Aniyomi still has the anime extensions built in and you can add manga repos the same as tachi

[–] noahimesaka1873@lemmy.funami.tech 5 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Seriously, Kakao is very, very nasty company that should be destroyed on this planet. If you live in Korea, you are basically forced to used their product and they suck, riddled with Ads because they're de facto standard for chat, taxi, etc. I hate having to use their product.

[–] CJOtheReal@ani.social 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Don't you have a Cartel office? Thats a illigal monopoly

We have one but they don't do anything :(

[–] throws_lemy@lemmy.nz 3 points 8 months ago (2 children)

They're notorious for overworking their artists. and authors. One of them is Solo Levelling artist died from brain hemorrhage in 2022 and he was working under Kakao.

it will not be easy because tachiyomi is open source and it is like whack a mole game

[–] CJOtheReal@ani.social 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Eh I've heard Pakistan is selling some nukes. Only problem is putting it up the ass of the asshole responsibil for that fucking company.

[–] thegreekgeek@midwest.social 7 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I wonder how much it would cost to send a bag of dicks internationally...

[–] CJOtheReal@ani.social 7 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

12kg 37,50€ for me... Pretty expensive but might be worth it.

[–] Gooey0210@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

Let's really do this, we can really crowdfund dicks And send them to their head office, or houses of their talking heads
