Oh no, yet more work for the Asahi Linux team...

Will they support more then 2 displays in the MacBook pro or do I have to get the "ultra" version of the CPU like with m1 and m2?

Is this for real? Man the rabid fanboys are even crazier than I thought.

[–] snowbell@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

Why would anyone who uses less than 3 displays (the vast majority of people) even care about only being able to use two displays?

Yup. People look at me weird when I complain about it though.

Workaround is to buy a DisplayLink dock which can run three monitors, insane that you have to use a third party solution though

And they’ll be unable to update or run current software in 10 years, yay

I’m mad that my wife’s imac from 2013 can’t update and Plex server won’t run on its old operating system.

My 6-year old PC can’t run Windows 11. Apple has some of the longest lasting software support in the industry.

If a 6 year old PC that cost as much as an Apple 6 years ago can't run Windows, you got ripped off.

I assembled it myself. It was more expensive than my M1 Air. It’s still a great machine. Microsoft just doesn’t support my CPU (i5 6600K) for some reason. It would probably run Windows very well if it was supported, I have no reason to think otherwise.

You could just bypass the cpu check

But yours can still run Plex

What's wrong with Linux? Wayland would run very nice on that screen.

I’m not authorized to “ruin” her computer. So I keep a Windows laptop on the closet shelf just for plex

A few years ago, I used dosdude's "patcher" to install 10.13 on a pretty old MacBook Pro that couldn't run it. It's been working really well. I think "OpenCore" might the more modern version of this. Worth a look?

[–] Yuletide@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

This looks super interesting https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

Also wow people are upgrading iMac CPUs

https://lowendmac.com/2018/penryn-t9300-9500-cpu-upgrades-for-the-2007-imac/

I do miss the days of swappable parts especially the soldered ram is such a ripoff just for a few mm of thinness that I don’t need
