This happens to me all the time, Its why I have like a million different characters in Skyrim. The main thing that works for me is to just dive in again, eventually you'll get into it and remember where you are and what you're doing.

Was literally talking about this with a friend yesterday.
Depending on the game you could see if it has a journal function of some sort that serves as a reminder, or perhaps an extras area where you can watch unlocked story sequences. (All story driven games should have some sort of reminder system IMHO.) Other than that watching some Let's Plays could help jog your memory.
Barring all that I have just started playing a game again and the story slowly came back to me as I continued to progress. In a few cases I totally started the game over from scratch.
I feel like modern games with a decent budget need a 'I've been gone for a while' option on the title screen.
A quick tutorial that gives you a rundown on the controls so you can jog your muscle memory and a recap of all the major plot beats you've experienced so far in your save.
Dude especially the competitive games though. I’ve always erred towards those kinds of games and I’ve always been pretty decent at them.
I played Valorant for maybe six (?) months with the last time being about a year ago. I got to mid Plat so I was decentish. But now, coming back, I think the game is trying to match me with people of my old skill level and it is zero fun.
I’ve experienced this with a number of competitive games. They hold on to your mmr. But imo that mmr should start to degrade over time. Otherwise it just makes it so hard to get back into that game. IE Valorant. I was so stoked to get back into that game but now after a full day of getting my ass handed to me I just don’t know that I can do it. As competitive as I am - if I’m not having fun in a game I’m not going to keep playing
All the time. Only a few games are the exception like AC Odyssey, Skyrim, or Fallout 4. So it's hard to get back into it, know what to do, even trying to go to the next quest feels so slow
The only way is to start over again, I got to play fallout 4 just after buying a Xbox series S, played a lot of it but didn't finish.
Months go bye and then I play fallout 3 and New Vegas, after those 2 I decided to play fallout 4 again and everything was so confusing, that I decided to start over again.
Basically don't start another game untill you finish one you already started.
Today I finished dead space remake and even though I did play the PS3 version some time ago I still remember some pieces here and there, memory got confused because I also Played dead space 2 and 3 on my PS3 about 2 years ago.

100 percent me too. So many games are over complicated to me these days and I just can't care enough to put in the brain effort lol. That's why a nice casual game is actually what I need to relax most times.
Absolutely. This is my #1 reason for restarts. I don't want to half-remember how I got to this point. If it's good enough to finish, it's good enough to start over.
