Apart from The Legend of Zelda games that I played in my childhood, I played Sable over a year ago and it made a huge impact, I still think about it today.

F.E.A.R. I haven’t played it in a while but I always think about it from time to time.

Bioshock. The twist is... well... a shock.

Final Fantasy 3 (sic)

[–] thatchiveguy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure, Arma 2 DayZ, Stand alone DayZ then tarkov as well. Gave me PTSD.

It actually kinda sucked.

The gear fear. I'll never play a extraction multiplayer shooter again.

I cannot for the life of me remember the name, but it was a climbing game on VR. It wasn't really all that interesting until I looked down. My brain couldn't comprehend that it wasn't something I was actually doing, but rather just a game. I'm super afraid of heights, so my toes went numb and heart started pounding seeing my 'feet' precariously perched a few inches from the edge of a cliff. I will never again say "It's just a game" knowing how easy it is to trick your brain with a game with total immersion.

May I ask what it was about Sable that affected you so much? I heard it’s coming to the PS subscription and I know nothing about it!

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. The blend of Metal Gear Solid, one of my favorite game franchises, and the James Bond style intro and spy themes was so amazing to me. It was definitely something that influenced my tastes as a kid.

Orwell. It was a Social Engineering penetration test and I failed. An invaluable lesson that I carry with me to this day.

Explain more about the social aspect. I'm an anthropology student so, it's more broad, but sociology is a big part of my interests so I'd be interested for sure in a game that tests social limits and shows us deeper, more implicit messages about society.

[–] Bugbrain_04@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It'd be a spoiler. It's only $10 on steam right now.

Asheron's Call.

No shit I was the first person to talk to Asheron. They had a monument permanently in game with a bunch of our server's players on it because we once kicked all the Devs ass for two weeks. I was weirdly famous in one of the first MMO's.

I just started this clan by dropping leaflets at lifestones and the next thing I knew I was the biggest monarch in beta. Items never cleared at that point, so the leaflets just sat there greeting new players forever. When we went live, everyone came along from Beta, recruited like crazy, and I had thousands and thousands of followers in a couple of weeks. You got xp from every follower you had, so I was just auto-levelling faster than anyone could grind. I was the highest level player in the world for months.

It was an Everquest and UO competitor so that's how old we're talking. The chat was one field, no filters, no dm's, nothing. I would log on and get 60-70 pages of messages every single day. It was honestly my job for a while. Never been anything that came close to that whole experience for me.

Final Fantasy 10... the story, characters, SOUNDTRACK, and gameplay simply left a lasting impression me. Still one of my favorites games featuring a hero's journey, love story, tragedy, friendship, and heroic sacrifice.

Demon's Souls (ps3).

It showed me that games that aren't afraid to rip you apart from the inside out, aren't afraid to exist today.

Hence the soulsbornekiro colloquialism that now includes Elden Ring and the like.

Personally I always loved devastatingly difficult games that had some serious weight and gravity behind their concepts. Which is why I fell in love with Everquest (1999-2003), King's Field (ps1), Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox), Devil May Cry (various consoles, entire series except for #2), the souls' series, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and so on.

The remarkable impact was: I felt like my own tastes in gaming were shared by someone else other than just me. It made me feel good about gaming again.

CONTROL, especially the maze. But the entire game is an amazing trip.

[–] draculthemad@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Far: Lone Sails has no justification being so good or so atmospheric for how short and small it is.

5 years on, I can close my eyes and still remember that ending.

[–] kingofbreakers@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s still Final Fantasy Tactics for me. One of the best narratives in an FF game coupled with a hugely addictive gameplay system. It gets a replay every other year still.

Silent Hill 2 the ending

[–] js_rich@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic has a special place in my heart as the first rpg game I played to completion as a kid. I could see how it influenced Mass Effect 1 when it was released, which is one of the first games I remember playing all night as a teenager.

Advent Rising. I loved the story from start to finish. With humanity be almost being wiped out snd finding out we are more important and powerful than we could imagine. I wish they finished the trilogy.

Need for speed underground 2

Ultima Online. Started playing as soon as it released in 1997 and it playing online with other people just blew me away. It was pretty much unheard of save for text-based games and The Realm, which no one played.

I still find myself thinking about it.

New super mario bros on the wii

[–] rtop@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Civilization. The original. Mind blowing. Not only did I play it countless times. I had fellow students sitting around all night strategizing with me. So fun.

[–] allways_The_Worst@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

red alert 2!

I think about it often and always have the fondest memories of it from my childhood.

The Walking Dead storytelling game. It was fucking amazing. It broke the hearts of me and my girlfriend. It was 1000x better than the TV show.

Death stranding for me. Played it during the COVID lock downs. The quiet lonely feeling that game invokes matched how I felt being stuck at home.

The soundtrack is so perfect and comes in at the right times.

Also really REALLY made me appreciate Amazon and UPS drivers. I leave snacks for them now at my door. They really do keep the country connected.

Keep on keeping on!

[–] Redstoneer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Minecraft satisfied my imagination for years. Too bad the MacBook i originally played on is dead.

[–] super_slide@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Rime. I played it after my brother passed and cried like a little baby.

Its a three way tie between Ocarina of Time, the LOTR games on ps2 and GameCube, and Super Mario Sunshine. I could go on and on, but those are probably the most prominent in my mind.

[–] novamber@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

FarCry 5. Such a great story

For me it was Halo 1-3 and Reach. Chief as a badass still motivates me when I go through crappy parts of my life.

For me I remember getting grand theft auto san andreas for Christmas as a kid. I probably played it religiously for the next 3 years and still to this day boot it up for a few hours of fun :( i miss the simpler times.

[–] djinabox9@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Earthbound for me. That was my first "big boy" game. I was only five lol, it helped me learn how to read. The adventure, love, kindness, humor... why it even got downright scary at times. It's always going to be my personal favorite game of all time.

[–] Sub_Omen@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Now that is an absolutely amazing game. I hate turn based games, the mother series is the only thing I enjoy and I enjoy it a lot!

[–] Bootychomper23@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’d say morrowind or mercenaries on og Xbox.

Knights of the old republic. The reveal, the characters. The meat bags.

[–] xBenji132@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Fable 1-3 and mass Effect 1-3.

The morality system and the decisions you can make is what does it for me. Idk why it is so goddamn hard to do an "evil" playthrough. Also, Fable and it's british humour is top notch imo.
