I prefer the touch ID. It doesn't require me to hold my phone up to my face all the time, whether I've washed my face or not, in the light or in the dark.

I'm not even sure if Face ID is constantly collecting my facial data, it's terrible.

98% of the times the phone gets unlocked seamlessly with Face ID, i think that is a feature that you will not use

[–] salloumk@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

If it's either or, no brainer - Face ID. Logging in to websites and apps, paying with Apple Pay, it's just so much better and seamless. I wouldn't mind having both but truthfully I don't really care about it. Face ID works fine for me 99.9% of the time. The only instances it's kinda iffy is when the phone is on a table and even that is getting much better with every generation.

Apple kind of “foreshadowed” that in-display fingerprint scanner will never a thing with iOS 16 where they moved the notifications to the bottom side of the screen.

Unless it's a new form of snappier and more reliable Touch ID, I think I'll prefer FaceID. Even with Samsung's slightly more secure Ultrasonic reader, it's accuracy and usability is impeded when you have a screen protector on. So if it's between an optical fingerprint scanner and FaceID, then I'd choose FaceID. UNLESS, Apple decides to be nice and add a fingerprint scanner onto the Lock button

Touch id on the action button

[–] sungho28@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Samsung has both so why not lol

[–] NastyCherryStan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

would rather have 3D touch back tbh. but why not all three.

[–] americapax@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Touch id in the screen (Samsung Galaxy S23 like)

[–] Concentrate_Full@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Face ID > Touch id, face id not working is such a rare occasion, it happens like once a month, these underscreen fingerprint sensors work 90% of the time. Hate them, id agree on having one only if they keep face id

[–] karthikchandra37@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

They already tried to move to solid state buttons, so if touch id is incorporated into power button with haptic feedback that would be a better implementation, without losing a lot of space inside under the screen.

[–] jonnyinexile@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Please no. Face ID is flawless

[–] valacious@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Face ID ftw

[–] MyRegrettableUsernam@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I can't imagine them ever doing this unless somehow FaceID didn't work with an under-display camera setup

[–] Hopeful-Session-7216@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This technology is not perfect yet. That’s why apple doesn’t want to use this feature.

[–] LeatherAndChai@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I love FaceID, and when I tried to use Pixel as a secondary phone, I started loving FaceID on iPhone even more.

The only benefit I see of Touch ID is that I can also add my SO's fingerprint for easy access.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 1 points 10 months ago

I had a phone with face unlock only during the pandemic and it was a pain when wearing a mask. Having both is essential, IMHO.

[–] Zestyclose-Web-6868@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I don’t need Touch ID tbh. I’m happy with Face ID

[–] LeanSkellum@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

There is no debate. FaceID’s pro’s outweigh the cons’s.

[–] InteractionOne3363@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Face ID is just much more convenient

[–] Freeze_Fun@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It's always nice to have both. The pandemic showed us the shortcomings of FaceID when we use a mask. Having TouchID means we have another method of authentication that suits our needs.

[–] pawlikx_iron@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I used fingerprint Scanner in android phones for years but after switching to iPhone I don’t miss it at all

[–] LineSpine@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Touch id was so much better tbh. Face id doesn’t work most of the time for me

[–] Tartessos_Sr@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Touch ID is the reason I still use an SE model. I doubt putting the Touch ID under the screen would preserve the reaction speed. I’ve seen phones with the screen button on the side with incorporated Fingerprint. With the background that iPhones are getting thicker again, this could be an acceptable solution.

[–] wo_ot@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

When I had an iPhone 12 the Face ID was slow and unreliable, and I wanted touch back. I just got the 15 and it’s quick and seamless, no need for Touch ID imo

[–] adrian_elliot@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Not happening.

[–] Kvpe@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Pass, I have Face ID

[–] sammy-a123@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’d want the Face ID to be kept but add fingerprint at the back of the phone like some Samsungs

I liked Touch ID, but FR is so much better.. I’m ok with them never bringing it back

[–] Murderkittin@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Do hashtags do anything on Reddit? Lol /s

I don’t need Touch ID. I don’t want it. If others do, let them have it, but allow me to disable it.

[–] D-T-M-F@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I can’t argue that having both wouldn’t be nice… But I if I had to choose only one, I’d give up FaceID in a heartbeat to have TouchID back in some form.

When I ask daft Siri for directions while driving and she responds, “You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first, but I don’t advise doing that while you’re driving,” it’s very unsafe (and technically illegal in some states) to be forced to make direct eye contact with your phone… On my old iPhone 6s, I could place a finger on the home button while the phone remained in my pocket. I know CarPlay is probably the answer, but some of us just don’t have it in our vehicles.

Considering this scenario, TouchID has probably saved a few lives, but I doubt FaceID has.

[–] ImPrettyEpicfr@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

touch id was a bitch on my 2022 se. would hate to see it come back because it would rise the price for something id not use

[–] CosmosBeyond@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Touch ID, definitely. Not giving up my SE3 for that reason; having the phone unlocked quickly and easily while I’m removing it from my pocket is so convenient. Why Apple can work it into the power button like they did with the iPad, I have no idea.

[–] beast_within_me@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

FaceID by far is so much better.

[–] Hutcho12@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Why would anyone want touch id when face id works so well?

[–] Obi-Lan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Because it doesn’t always work so well.

[–] adsefc1@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Works perfectly for me, Touch ID was good before Face ID, now it’s obsolete in my opinion

[–] p0op@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I recently set up an old iPad mini 4 I had laying around, after using FaceID only devices for the past few years. I forgot how fast it is to unlock and get right back to where you were, without having to do the awkward hold the phone up to your face move or tilt the iPad at an angle to get the right capture.

It was so fast in comparison, I thought the device wasn't getting locked when I pressed the sleep button and had to try waking it up with another finger where it prompted for the PIN.

Face ID is nice, but I'll stand by TouchID being superior for seamless just grabbing a device and authenticating before it's made it to your face.

[–] Niller11@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I honestly dont care for it, no need to have it. I never have any trouble with FaceID

[–] DarkLord55_@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Touch ID on the power button would be great just like the iPad Air I think it’s on

[–] drgmaster909@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I went 5s -> 8 -> 2020 SE (body of 8) and held out until 15P hoping they'd bring back TouchID.

If they do this "soon" I'mma be so pissed.

But as a TouchID die-hard... FaceID has been really nice. Thanks to all of you for beta-testing it for me for the last 6 years :)

[–] Senn_Ex556@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Honestly I believe the only reason they haven’t done it is because they’re stubborn. They’ve added touch ID on side buttons on certain iPad models like plenty of android manufacturers, why can’t they do it for iPhone too?

[–] simeonleni@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Its will be nice if the apple logo had touch id

[–] Loui_ii@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I think I prefer touch id, but face id certainly has it’s advantages dirty hands gloves and such.

[–] dottybotty@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Hell no face id so much better than finger print readers

[–] DAVID_BONGO@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I think having both would be nice, no?

[–] toobigtoopleasurable@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

one of the side buttons (power) could be made to have the same function - if they wanted to

Apple being Apple

[–] Luna259@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It needs to come back and be alongside Face ID
