But the aliens wouldn't share the resources with us, or maybe like just a pittance to keep us alive so we could be used as cheap lab.... oh I see where this is going.

We’d settle for straight up feudalism at this point. Serfs had guaranteed jobs, housing, food, and a decent amount of time off.

I wouldn't mind being part of a work crew building a futuristic ray gun aimed at destroying a planet 30 light years away that I know nothing about.

At least I'd get lunch right? .... Right?

If we ever found intelligent aliens, some of us would absolutely try to convert them to christianity, and there are already plans to exploit planetoids for their resources. We are the alien invaders, sans space travel.

[–] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We'd probably at least be closer to tech breakthroughs like space travel if it wasn't for religious and capitalist shit holding us back

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago

At the very least we'd feel less need to leave our current planet.

[–] Dark_Dragon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

Think of it other way around, its due to people like them that we want to leave the planet early

Basically, we're the Mirror Universe in Star Trek.

I’m starting to think there will be no forced mating

"W-well then we will corrupt your politics to sow discord and make you destroy yourselves!"

"..."

"Pollute your global water supply?"

"..."

"Change your climate so the water levels rise and endanger countless lives?"

"..."

"Holy shit."

Can you guys take over? So at least we can feel like it was inevitable?

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The aliens will never invade. There's no intelligent life on this planet.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Also, no need to invade when we're content to destroy ourselves.

Almost every star has a planetary system or at least asteroid rings. There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone. If any civilization has mastered FTL travel, there is literally unlimited free real estate everywhere and thus no need for wars. Simply hop to another star system.

until there's a Space Genghis Khan

[–] ultratiem@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

I don’t know if I’d be all that upset serving General Krul and the intergalactic federation

"I'll treat you like you treat the global south" is a more specific and actionable threat.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Don't blame me, I voted for Megatron.

[–] Cascio@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I'm just here for the Tom Servo avatar.

This one really gives further weight to this comment from another thread, intelligence wasn't supposed to evolve here because the planet's dangerous and we are also fucking mad

Oh this is basically the plot to the Damned Trilogy. Awesome Sci fi, highly recommend. It's a bit hard to read at first because it's often also from the perspectives of the aliens

Love me some HFY esque stories, good link!

One of the best online Reddit stories, with forest stairs.

The only thing I seem to miss from the move to Lemmy...

[–] irmoz@reddthat.com 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Come here! I will help you conquer this world. Our civilization is no longer capable of solving its own problems. We need your force to intervene.

ITT: people sitting in their comfortable first world environment commenting using electronics which were certainly mined somewhere, convinced they're oppressed and not the root cause.
