A symbol for back-alley abortions. Dangerous, painful, and scary, representing some of the most important reasons why legal abortion is necessary. One assumes the slash through it means "abortion should not be illegal", but I have to admit it's not the clearest symbol in the bunch.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Grandmothers in the United States get it.

[–] xantoxis@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's less that the wire hanger is an unknown icon of the abortion struggle (it isn't), and more that the symbol is presented in an unclear way: does the slash mean "no abortions"? Or "no, abortions!" The thing is, both forced birth advocates and pro choice advocates would hate the wire hanger, just for different reasons.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 11 months ago

Risky abortions have been around since time immemorial. The coathanger arose during the 20th century as an alternative to poisoning one's self with pennyroyal or ascorbic acid to induce a miscarriage.

The point of modern abortions is they are safe, and in fact considerably safer than pregnancy. Our anti-abortion community wants to punish women for participating in sex, even when they do not consent, either by suffering through pregnancy or through a risky miscarriage.

And their other policy positions reveal they have no actual interest in the welfare of the child.

So it's a symbol in suppprt of safe and legal abortions? I mean I guess it's better than having a baby crossed out or smth.

I was just joshing you, playing a little trick, I think it's for atheism.

[–] h3mlocke@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Lmao, "atheism"

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 39 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Anarchism. The circle-A drawn like that (without the lines extending beyond the circle) is how it's traditionally drawn.

[–] ciko22i3@sopuli.xyz 7 points 11 months ago (4 children)

i don't understand how most of lemmy is pro-communist but also pro-anarchist at the same time

[–] oldGregg@lemm.ee 24 points 11 months ago (1 children)

...different people with different opinions?

You do know lemmy isn't one person yeah?

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 11 months ago

Inside you are two wolves. One is communist, the other an anarchist.

[–] SolarNialamide@lemm.ee 21 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Anarchism and communism are 95% the same in regards to goals. They just have different views on how to get there, that differ very little or a lot depending on the specific sub ideology, of which there are many. The 5% with different goals are some anarchist tendencies which want to keep markets and money, like mutualism. Everyone else wants a stateless, moneyless and classless society where people contribute according to their ability and receive according to their need on the basis of mutual aid. And no, "anarcho"-capitalism is not a thing, that's an oxymoron.

Personally I'd be a ok with just some wealth redistribution, but everyday without that I am getting more radicalized.

[–] hernanca@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wealth redistribution is only resetting the board, not a change in the game.

[–] ciko22i3@sopuli.xyz 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

i like the game, just not my starting position

[–] h3mlocke@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That's literally the game.

[–] ciko22i3@sopuli.xyz 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

i just lost the fucking game

Sounds like you should learn more about the history of the two concepts then, because they've never been mutually exclusive.

what does the colours flag mean ?

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 35 points 11 months ago (1 children)

🏳️‍🌈 LGBT+ Pride

Also Apple Computer, circa 1970s. Vivid colors on your VHS and Betamax recordings. And a lot of kid's stuff including Sesame Street.

But in this case, LGBT+ pride.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 12 points 11 months ago (2 children)

What's with the coat-hanger one? Isn't that a pro-life symbol?

[–] DrDominate@lemmy.world 37 points 11 months ago (7 children)

I think it's more pro abortion because banning abortion leads to a rise in unsafe "coat hanger" abortions.

[–] riodoro1@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

This. I was confused with it at first, especially because it was in an ambiguous circumstances. But it does make sense, come to think if it there is no real symbol for anti-abortion you can easily cross out and expect everyone to know what it means.

when i read fuzzy memory i thought it was a complementary concept to fuzzy logic and asked myself why on earth you would want your stored data to be fuzzy.
