Awful smug for a place that still has Croydon.

[–] Guru_Meditation_@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

LOL! American here who stayed in a Premier Inn in Croydon. That place s so sad it reminded me of home. :’(

[–] DopamineDaydreams@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Croydon surely isn't that bad

[–] hello_cruel_world@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was OK 20 years ago. Then I left, and it went to shit

[–] Toothpickjim@lemmy.fmhy.ml 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

For clarity are you saying it became shit when you left?

[–] hello_cruel_world@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

To confirm: yes

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Going to enjoy repeating this at all my US friends all night and pretending I came up with it, cheers.

[–] digdilem 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This is the true internet way. (I stole it from someone else too and am cheerfully passing it off as mine)

[–] fluke@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They keep thinking that they pulled a fast one on us by dumping all that tea in the river, but it was our plan to get the world's largest brew going.

Joke's on them. We have plenty more.

-Sir, sir, the Yankees are refusing to pay taxes!

-Really? Bit annoying.

-They're marching on Boston!

-Are they? Well, I'm sure it'll blow over.

-And they're dumping crates of tea into the harbour!

-WHAT??? TOTAL WAR!!!!

You can have Florida back, mate.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Shouldn't it go back to Spain?

[–] Helldiver_M@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Spain, bottom of the ocean, wherever idc.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

bottom of the ocean

Give it another decade or so and problem solved.

[–] Arrakis@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Job well done, boys.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Please take me back. I promise to be good this time.

Have mercy!

I’ll eat my meat, so I can have my pudding.

Happy Divestiture Of The Colonies Day!

[–] ChouffeMeUp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Ha ha ha, surely the best way to look at it!

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Because what has the U.S. ever done since declaring independence? Truly nothing but a downward slope since the heady colonial days.

This is like Hugh Grant, when the anniversary of the Elizabeth Hurley divorce rolls around, trying to pretend he's drinking cabinets of scotch because he's "celebrating no longer being responsible for that bitch, Liz" and totally not because he's a broken, barely-recognizable husk of his former glorious self. And we should know.

[–] Roundcat@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Today we celebrate being the first to Brexit, and actually being successful at it.

The first real nation anyway. Not any of those lame nations and countries that aren't America as if they matter. Psssssh.

[–] Arbiter@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

But Florida sided with the Crown and remained a colony.

[–] tal@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Florida Man strikes again.

[–] gentleman@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

@digdilem We took Florida and Texas from the Spanish fair and square and bought Louisiana from the French. You guys kept Canada but had to split it with the French. You can have Florida and Texas so we’ll trade you for Canada. They seem very nice.

[–] asjmcguire@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Canada has decent healthcare, and I'd be worried that if we let you have Canada - you'd degrade that. America is basically a floating shopping mall. Everything is for sale. Even things that really shouldn't be.

[–] gentleman@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

@asjmcguire I'd say both observations are true, at least now. They only invented shopping malls 60 years ago and it wasn't always like that. America has good healthcare if you have a well paying job with a decent insurance policy. Otherwise you're fucked and will be bankrupted. We still want Canada though.

@digdilem

[–] ballzovsteel@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

I don’t want to be responsible for Florida.

[–] bioemerl@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You can never totally divest from the fire you started friends. Even if it burns beyond your control.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

You should be telling that to the Dutch, French and Spanish. All forgotten when it comes to the origins of the USA.

[–] Helldiver_M@kbin.social 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

True, but you guys did Brexit.

[–] Hyperreality@kbin.social 0 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

If Europe celebrated no longer being held responsible for everything that goes wrong in the UK, we'd do it on the 31st of January.

But we don't. For the UK brexit is one of the most important and monumental decisions it's ever made. For Europe it was a Thursday.

[–] Metaright@kbin.social 0 points 2 years ago

I changed my mind. Can we come home? ='(

[–] Kravenseye@kbin.social 0 points 2 years ago

Yeah...er.... we can take a collection up to pass it back.... I mean, we'll keep the mouse... the rest is all yours! :)
