Frequently Asked Questions about Artemis

Technical details

What is Artemis using for building its user interface?

The Artemis UI is built with React Native + Typescript.

How does Artemis work with kbin?

Artemis uses its own API which scrapes kbin. This is only temporary until an official kbin API is available.

Is Artemis open-source?

Artemis is currently not open-source yet, however it is planned in the future.

What mobile platforms is Artemis available on?

Artemis is available for iOS and Android.

How will testers get the app?

Internal Testers receive test releases first from expo.dev links, while Beta Testers will get releases from TestFlight (iOS) and Google Play Testing (Android).

How is login information stored within the app?

Login credentials are stored locally on your device and are fully encrypted.

Will Artemis support Linux* phones?

There are currently not any plans to support Linux devices, sorry!

Will microblogging work while logged into a Lemmy instance?

No, the microblogging feed will be hidden unless you are logged in with a kbin instance account.

Will there be any monetisation?

Yes, however the core functionality will be free forever. Special features that might need server upcosts (none at the moment) or "premium" skins will be monetised, primarily leaning on donations.

Roadmap

When will I have access to the beta?

Now.

  • Public Beta (0.2.0) release - Limited to the Artemis instance for new users until the official kbin API rolls out elsewhere
  • Public Beta (0.2.1) release - Lemmy API support

What key features will Artemis have?

Disclaimer: These are subject to change.

  • Collapsible comments and posts
  • Haptic feedback on vote, refresh, etc.
  • Seamless navigation with swipe gestures
  • Swipe voting on comments and posts
  • Easily distinguish users and posts not from your instance via the globe next to their name

Suggestions from us to the community

  • We encourage you to take a look at the Github milestones to see what features are planned to be implemented with each release.
  • Check out the roadmap that @hariette is keeping updated on Google Docs.
  • Go to the Artemis repo, parse the README, then take a look at the issue tracker to see if any bugs you've seen have already been reported

I’m looking forward to Apollo’s sister stealing the show!

[–] Chozo@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

Oh my god, I just now got the name. Thank you!

[–] McBinary@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

I don't recall there being a consensus on FOSS status, so i was wondering if there was going to be an initial cost? Or a potentially a price for a pro version so @hariette can continue development on it long-term and be compensated for her work?

[–] heyfluxay@nerdbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

Can’t wait for kbin apps to start dropping.

[–] hawdini@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

We're currently in that weird limbo phase. Too late to use Apollo, too early to use Artemis. It truly is a weird time.

Great seeing there's quick progress on this, though. Thank you!

[–] LollerCorleone@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Thank you for all the work you are putting into this!

[–] bencurrandev@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Been following the development on Mastodon, screenshots and videos look great! Been a huge fan of Apollo so similar UI sounds great to me!

Moved from Lemmy to kbin and dying for an app as opposed to a web app. kbin web app works for now but need an app!

[–] AnonymousLlama@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Sweet, can't wait to see the UIs and designs everyone comes up with on these apps

[–] L-N-Owhere@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Looking forward to trying Artemis! Exciting times for both developers and users as the Fediverse/Threadiverse grows and evolves.

[–] Blakerboy777@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

So excited for this! Can't wait till I get a chance to test it.

[–] steppinwolf@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Awesome project. Getting ready to join beta testing. Is there a known ETA for the official kbin API?

[–] okbin@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Looking forward to being able to use it once it’s my turn :)

Possibly a stupid question as I don’t know anything about making an app or APIs - since Artemis doesn’t use kbin’s API yet, can you still post comments through Artemis? Or is it read-only for now?

[–] w8l@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not necessarily. This comment is an example, since commenting just rolled out to internal testers.

Posted with Artemis (beta)

Thanks! Neat!

[–] Jezebelley@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Can't wait to test this app!

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

Is the app dead? All I get for months now is an error.

Artemis could not talk to instance.

And when I click on my account it ends to getting stuck in a loop just showing the logo.

Can't wait to see how it develops!

[–] szczur@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I can't wait. Thank you!

[–] cls@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Excited for the app and thank you!

[–] McBinary@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Artemis uses its own API which scrapes kbin. This is only temporary until an official kbin API is available.

Will this be transposable onto an official API, or will there have to be a silly amount of rewrite to make it compatible when an API is available?

[–] seaneoo@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Obviously not one of the devs, but theoretically the whole API fetching process should be fairly streamlined so only endpoints and response models would need to be changed

[–] Fermiverse@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

How does Artemis work with kbin?
Artemis uses its own APl which scrapes kbin.
This is only temporary until an official kbin APl is
available.

Isn't there an official api under https://docs.kbin.pub/#introduction or is it not working properly?

Just curious as scraping is one thing but you have to do the work twice when switching to the api

[–] DuckCake@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you so, so much for your work on this! Every update makes the project look that much more exciting!

[–] djidane535@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Currently testing the app and it’s really awesome (and there is so many updates day after day :)). Thanks a lot for your hard work :).

I noticed that you mentioned microblogging in the FAQ, is it already available and I am missing how to access it?

[–] MelenHirren@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Now testing the iOS TestFlight version. Many thanks to Hariette and the team, you’re doing a great job! Will give the beta a go and give feedback if necessary.

[–] ultra@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Looking forward to the day Artemis becomes free and open source. That's when I'll be sure to try it out!

[–] Maxstone@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Indiana_Jones@artemis.camp 1 points 1 year ago

Started using the app today and it looks pretty awesome. Could use some small UI improvements, but I'm sure that will be finetuned later

[–] spignot@readit.buzz 1 points 1 year ago

Just a question because I'm still new to kbin - can you pin threads to the top of a magazine yet? Is there a way to pin a FAQ thread where people can ask questions and get them answered by the devs, as well as current alpha/beta testers? This FAQ was super helpful, and it would be nice to continue building on that where everyone can get easy access.

[–] joshuarupp@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I really hope I am not asking a question that has already been answered somewhere. I have looked in the FAQ so if I missed something, I apologize. How do you block a user from the Artemis application? There are a few spammers that I would love to stop showing on my feed. :)
