Advisory:
Please do not harass anybody who was involved in Artemis, no matter what. Everyone’s got their own lives going on and nobody knows the full extent behind actions or lack thereof. If any does occur, we vehemently condemn it without question.

Let’s get straight to the point:
@Lilkev and I (@w8l) are formally stepping down as moderators of the Artemis app communities (Discord, Matrix, and kbin), due to a lack of communication from project lead and founder @hariette.

Many people in the Artemis community have been patient and understanding of the lack of activity, ever since a prior period of radio silence was justified by Hariette saying that she was recovering from chronic pain. However, this has gone on for long enough that the official Artemis Camp instance has failed over and never recovered. This is a problem for Artemis app users, since it is the only instance that is supported. We are also unable to continue performing our duties as moderators in the Camp instance as a result. This effectively means that the entire project is dead.

We also want to deeply apologise for not pushing open-sourcing the application code sooner. The original rationale for not doing so immediately (according to Hariette) was a fear of showing poor quality code in public. In hindsight, bad quality code in the open would’ve been preferable to nothing at all; this would’ve allowed the app to continue in some form in an event like this. And even if the project remained active, the code quality would’ve likely improved with contributions anyways.

Multiple attempts at communication from us and the rest of the OG squad, both publicly and privately, have occurred with the founder to no avail.

We advise moving to directly using kbin or mbin on web, using Lemmy with its many clients, or supporting Lunar for iOS. Lunar is a Lemmy client currently in the process of implementing support for the kbin/mbin API and is already open-source, so it is considerably less likely to meet the same fate as Artemis. There is a kbin community for Lunar at m/lunar on the main kbin instance.

The journey was great while it lasted, but all journeys come to an end. We hope to see you all somewhere else, on some other day…

Ernest is on fire lately, and he has now confirmed that the API will be unlocked in the next release of kbin!

It remains to be seen if Artemis automatically discovers that the API is available, or if some further work is needed by Hariette to enable things on the Artemis side. I hope she's doing well.

I've enjoyed using Artemis even though I can't login through it (I'm on kbin). It's been interesting to be a pure lurker instead of an avid commenter like I was on the former site. In the past couple of days, though, Artemis has failed to fetch any new content. Deleting the iOS app and reinstalling through Testflight does nothing; the 1-2 day old posts pop right back up and nothing new will come in.

At this point the question has to be asked: is work on Artemis still proceeding? Aside from a few drips and drabs Hariette hasn't been heard from in at least a month. I really hope the dream of an Apollo-like fediverse app -- which Artemis was already previewing very well for us -- isn't dead.

https://kbin.social/api is a 404, but the API PRs have already been merged...

Kbin (and kbin.social) is slated for a major update this week that is supposed to bring in some improvements as well as the API.

My question is, How long after this update will it take for kbin.social to be added as an option for Artemis?

Just wondering - the app is great and I know I am not the only one really appreciating all the hard work going into it!

Hey y’all, it’s been a while. Had a rough month with a flare up of my chronic pain. Doing better now and had a chance to recharge. And I’m so dying to get back to contributing to the #fediverse community ✨❤️

I’m guessing @Hariette has been taking a well-deserved break?

Or maybe the API integration into kbin has not proceeded as smoothly as hoped?

At any rate. I mostly just wanted to make a thread via web browser on artemis.camp and check if I could see it in the TestFlight article.

I mentioned the app in the FAQ. Let me know if there are any other quick blurbs you would like me to add.

Also, here is a link to the home page, in case you are interested.

I’m loving Artemis but starting to realize that I’m suffering for not being able to post comments or replies after a month or so of using the app. Is there any sense of when support for more instances is coming?

Has there been any update on when the kbin API will be available? A few weeks ago, I heard it would be "a few days," and haven't heard anything since.

I'm taking it slow because of some personal stuff I'm dealing with right now. But I'll be back soon. Appreciate y'all <3

I'm getting timeouts and bad gateways trying to access artemis.camp preventing me from authenticating on the Artemis app TestFlight beta.

Is there a place for reporting bugs or downtime? Or a status page to keep us updated?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but do we know how moderating will work from Artemis? Has this feature been implemented, and will there be any tools beyond what kbin already has available?

Thanks!

Microblogs are an interesting thing. I was never able to get into Twitter or Mastodon because it feels so disorganized and chaotic to me. That said, I think microblog compatibility is low key one of Kbin’s best features with a lot of potential. The problem is that right now it seems like kbin doesn’t really know what to do with it.

This is where I wonder if a dedicated Kbin app like Artemis could really carry it further. Has there been any discussion on this yet? How would you imagine microblogs being better implemented with Artemis?

I avoid the Google Play store whether possible. It would be great to discover Artemis on the Fdroid community.

FYI, been working on figuring out the login bug with Artemis on Android. Have a lead, let's see if it pans out 🤞🏼

After that, it's looking at the issue tracker and prioritizing. So definitely react with thumbs up on things you want done ASAP.

At the same time, working on adding:

  1. User profile content feed
  2. Saving posts
  3. Microblogging
  4. Lemmy support

A lot of the things above have been in the works for weeks. So it seems like a lot but it's less work that what you might think :)

Can't log in (lemm.ee)

Just downloaded the Android beta. When I tried to log in with artemis.camp, it took me to Firefox, where I logged in and pressed authorise, and then I went back to Artemis and it said waiting for browser. Now when I press the artemis.camp button again it brings me to a white screen in Firefox, and still says waiting for browser.

I've also tried it with chrome but same issue

Okay, disclaimer this is just a "not even 5 minutes in" type of thing at this point, but I wanted to start the complaining about a few things already. ;)
Also, I use it without an account at this point. I don't know if that affects any of the app features right now, besides the obvious ones to communicate & vote of course.

  • Compact mode thumbnails are microscopic in size. Thumbnail size is already a sore spot for me because most Reddit & Lemmy apps are also pretty bad in that regard (likely focusing more on the big cards, dunno), but this is by far the worst example I've seen. It's especially sad considering that the desktop kbin page is the polar opposite to this. In compact mode it actually fills the entire space out that is available to it.

  • Thumbnails also cannot be swapped to the left side.

  • I love that there's an option to have all comments collapsed. However, I'd like it if I manually collapse a comment again (if we talk about the top level one), that it does not collapse the entire thing, including the content, but goes back to its previous state. I assume this might've been a case of "afterwards it is already read so we don't need it" design choice, but I'd like to see an option where collapsing comments manually doesn't do that.

  • The "swipe left to go back" option does not seem to do anything, or I am misunderstanding how it is supposed to work?

  • After scrolling for even just a little bit the app starts to slow down significantly.

  • The Android icon could be improved instead of just being a small square in a circle (I believe that's like the stock default icon settings on the newer Android versions).
