Formerly chapo.chat and r/chapotraphouse, they are a tankie instance that frequently brigades threads that mention them, and engage in harassment campaign against anyone who disagrees with them. They also frequently praise and defend Russia and China, two genocidal dictatorships in which one is engaging in an illegal war against ukraine and china has rampant human rights abuses. Since there are good faith users on that instance, they are more of a hesitation than a censure.

So this account was made an hour ago by someone who claims to be an “Anonymous hate researcher that has worked with top academic researchers worldwide on combating hate on social media! Here to document hesitant and bad faith nazi instances!”

Say what you will about Hexbear, we are not Nazis. CTH was banned by Reddit for advocating the k*lling of the precursors of nazis ie slave-owners.

Also, while the majority of our users might identify as “Tankies”, from the very beginning, we have always been a non-sectarian platform that does not tolerate leftist infighting and welcomes all manner of leftists from MLs to anarchists. Yes, we have more MLs but we do have some anarchists and as soon as any shitslinging is pointed out, mods immediately ban it.

Framing us a tankie instance, like some of the others that actually declare so in their rules and ban other forms of leftists is an outright lie if not just a very bad indication of your research skills.

On Russia and China, you can have disagreements with the majority opinion on hexbear itself, as long as you don’t just parrot the US state department line. Is it as good as it can be? No, I myself would like more diversity of opinion on a lot of topics. But we are literally all leftist, anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist. That means any criticism of Russia or China or any of these other “enemy” nations has to be from those perspectives i.e. they cannot be bad faith accusations from Biden or Trump stooges.

From our perspective, which is a leftist, anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist one, there is no argument that the Western states like the US and its various puppets/allies are obviously terrible and, what did you you say, are “genocidal” and carry out “rampant human rights abuses”. Does this mean other states aren’t? No, not at all.

But because most of us live in these states, which we call the “imperial Core”, these are the states we want to focus on and change, rather than empowering them more unlike the Libs and the Cons who think their own states are somehow better and more civilised than the others.

Again, you can disagree, but it has be well-reasoned and anti-capitalist at the very least.

Also, I was against federation from the start. I’ve always hated the idea. And posts like this do nothing to disprove me. I’ve also noticed you calling people commenting on this post as “brigading”. Pal, this literally showing up on our feed. What do you want us to do?

Lmao that's fucking hilarious

Honestly some of the other summaries might be helpful for our mods to know if there are transphobic or creepy instances worth monitoring and potentially defederating from. And credit where it is due, they didn't actually tell folks to defederate us, there is stronger criticism for other instances in their work thus far. I would dispute their assessment of us but I think it is in good faith.

Summary of !fediblock@lemmy.dbzer0.com, which is where we are right now:

Bring up any fediverse instances other fediverse admins should block and your reasons why.

And credit where it is due, they didn't actually tell folks to defederate us, there is stronger criticism for other instances in their work thus far.

Posting hexbear.net to !fediblock@lemmy.dbzer0.com is already a call to block. This isn't a place to post a review of Fediverse instances, it's a place to request that specific Fediverse instances be blocked.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

There is a contradiction then. They are recommending outright censure in other posts and clarifying a more mild stance on some, like ours. Maybe they can clarify.

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

If you would care to help us curb our hate group tendencies as you have identified them, could anyone explain what would be an acceptable way to have a different perspective and opinion from that of the US State Department on its enemies without being a tankie? Is it our tone when talking about foreign policy or just that an opinion other than the consensus is being expressed? Surely there's a non tankie way to engage on these serious global issues while still expressing a different view.

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Since its on my feed, I guess I can say something without you labelling it as 'harassment'?

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

I will say, looking at the other posts, we do seem to be the only community engaging at all with the assessments. I guess associating with pedophiles doesn't bother lemm.ee enough for them to dispute the charge.

I find it interesting that casually associating with pedophiles earns less opprobium than being a tankie in this system of evaluation.

Case #2 of hexbear users coming in and brigading

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago

It's literally not brigading, it is on the front page of our instance and it is talking about us. We are commenting on posts on our front page. People need to define their terms because currently "brigading" means "they are engaging with a post they can see."

[–] Flinch@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago

I am begging you to please learn how federation works

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

This isn't reddit. The whole point of federation is that different instances can interact with eachother.

This really shouldn't be hard to understand.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

Do you need a diaper? I have a spare one. These damn tankies scare me so much it's just smart to be prepared.

[–] girl@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

I’ve been seeing a lot of people confusing brigading with being downvoted/disagreed with heavily. Brigading would be if someone from Hexbear specifically posted a link to your post on one of their communities, encouraging others to visit your post, downvote, and harrass you. Hexbear users finding your post while browsing all and dogpiling on you is not brigading, it’s just how it works when there are lots of Hexbear users browsing all new posts.

[–] LibsEatPoop@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Case #1 of hexbear user coming in, in bad faith

[–] btbt@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago

Very bold to accuse us of genocide denial and then complain that we’re acting in bad faith, I almost admire the audacity

Notice how they consistently upvote themselves.

[–] bloopernova@programming.dev 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So are you saying you have defed'd hexbear, or that you won't? I'm confused, sorry 😔

[–] btbt@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Considering that I saw this post in my feed I’m assuming they haven’t defederated

[–] bloopernova@programming.dev 13 points 1 year ago

Thank you, I appreciate the info!

[–] girl@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Other way around. If they defederate from Hexbear, they will not be able to see Hexbear posts, but as long as Hexbear remains federated with OP’s instance, Hexbear users will be able to see the posts. Federation is a one way street.

[–] FediWatch@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

Depends on the moderation levels of your instance

[–] D61@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

yea

Hey buddy, I "anonymously hate researching" too.
