Relay finally shut down without subscription - not sure how much I'll really use reddit from hereon out, most of my time is on lemmy anyway

Relay was reddit to me, but I uninstalled July 1 and haven't been back. I wish the developer luck, but I doubt this works out for him. There are a probably a couple hundred diehard users who will pay, but is that enough to sustain development? Besides, reddit wants to track users, so they'll just turn the API screws and increase prices whenever convenient even if Relay manages to hang on. Reddit has proved they are not a reliable business partner, so at this point whatever happens is on him. Too bad he couldn't have gone out with some dignity like the Apollo dev.

Occasionally I’m tempted to look at Reddit again, and then I remember that I’d have to use the web or official client now, so it would all just be ads anyway…

If you have to view reddit. old.reddit.com on FF with ublock is the least worst option.

Or use RSS.

On mobile the stupid site still gives me the popup every time for getting the app. I try not to bother.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I stopped using mobile to access reddit when that bullshit started.

I catch it every so often but I’m not really missing anything anymore. Kinda like reaching for a newspaper for more takes on a story.

I'm a die-hard Sync user, but often checked out other Reddit apps. Relay was really really good. I often used it for extended periods just to take a break from the Sync monotony.

I hope Relay does well with the subscription service, but we all know it's doomed unless Reddit made a very drastic change in their API policies.

Good luck and god speed, Relay

RedReader is a working Reddit app alternative. Free and open source.

Am I missing something or does this only have a cards type mode?!

Edit: You have to disable "inline previews" to get a regular / compact view.
Edit: Too bad you need an account for subbing. One of the features I'll miss from Infinity.

RedReader, right? You can add custom subs by going to a subreddit and select "Pin to Main Menu" from menu. You can do this without an account.

[–] DarkThoughts@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Yes but that does not create a custom frontpage with just your subscribed subs. Infinity was able to do that even without an account.
Not a huge fan of the colors & layout of RedReader either but it's not like there's a lot of options now.

Most of my time is on Lemmy now, but Relay was my go to Reddit experience before the api-pocolypse. Just uninstalled Relay. Sad times.

Thank you for relaying this information to us.

This will be my first Lemmy post, I swapped because of the API changes and I'm so glad I did, the comments and the general discussions are still kind of fucked but they don't go near the reddit level and I'm kinda happy, I'm even using the app less than before!

So yeah fuck Reddit go Lemmy?

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Aww, that sucks. I only go to Reddit for one small, private sub these days, and I don't go daily, so I hadn't noticed. I've exclusively used Relay for several years. I really like the private sub, but I'm not sure I can stand the web interface. There's no way I'm downloading the app. My days there might be waning. Bummer.

No shade to the developer though - he seems like a good guy trying his best to keep his app working.

Reddit is an SEO wasteland for me now. I only ever visit specific threads via search engines. I never see a feed, a front page, do a search or see anything other than what's returned via google, on old.reddit. That's how it'll die. When most users are just finding ancient info via google or bing.

[–] chepox@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Oh dang. I got the same message earlier today. Wasn't really using the app anymore too much but it really does infuriate me that we had such a good thing going with reddit there for a while.

[–] whereBeWaldo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

This was also my experience this morning, I guess I'll just be using the old reddit on PC from time to time to check updates on the games I play

Thank you for relaying this information

Vulcan is a proud Relay user and relying on this app for Reddit for years, but The Snoo Platform alienated me away and nowadays, Vulcan is roaming around here and fediverse.

[–] KalChoedan@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Have they said what's happening with Relay Pro (the old one-off paid version)?

[–] Trabic@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Mine is still working. Mind you, I had to check.
