On this day in 1978, United Steelworkers union workers in Sudbury, Ontario voted to go on strike to fight proposed layoffs and pay cuts. The strike was the longest in Canadian history until the record was broken by Sudbury workers in 2009.

The layoffs and cuts to pay and benefits were at the multi-national company Inco, which cited low nickel prices as a justification.

According to filmmaker Martin Duckworth, workers voted to strike against the advice of the United Steelworkers hierarchy, and the strike enjoyed national support because Inco was a known polluter and one of the biggest multi-nationals in Canada.

Around 11,600 workers were involved in the strike, which affected the wages sustaining 43,000 people, or about 26% of the population of metropolitan Sudbury. By the end of the strike, nine months later, the company had been deprived of over twenty-two million hours of labor.

The workers won small wage increase and a pension package, however thousands of workers lost their homes and cars because of the length of the strike. According to journalist Amy Miller, since 1979, INCO has fired 20,000 employees from their staff and now have more people receiving payments from the pension roll than pay roll.

The role of women in the community during the strike was profiled in the 1980 documentary film A Wives' Tale (Une histoire de femmes).

All Out to Support Striking Vale Inco Workers!

RETVRN guy who gets angry at TERFs who complain about the prefix cis, not because he's an ally, but because he's used to reading Cisalpine Gaul all the time in his books on Caesar.

EXTREMELY HIGH WIN RATE MTG ULTRA BUILD:

[You must be a minor in whatever country you are in for this to work. Ideally, this works best in the United States and you must be under 21]

  1. Play Ashnod's Coupon

  2. Select target beverage as a beer or other such alcoholic beverage

  3. Call the police and inform them that your opponent has been purchasing alcohol for a minor

  4. Win by default as your opponent is arrested

Promised to go on a short trip with a family member months ago. I kind of regret that choice now (covid).

But, I hate how I felt like I had to explain to them that I will be masking in the growded areas and spots on this trip, because I don't want to get sick again. Have had nasty longcovid issues for a while and my partner is high risk and also had stuff stick longterm

I hate how I felt like I had to explain myself.

I hate how stigmatized it is.

I hate how this person will reply with "of course, you do you", but still has a huge chip on their shoulder for someone reminding them of the reality we live in. Also will probably be all weird as they are "ashamed" if they stand out, this was the most difficult bit for them with masking. I will make them stand out by association.

I have witnessed the anger before. They yelled at me in the summer when I noticed them coughing and asked if they are sure they aren't sick. I was ruining their freedom to spread stuff.

At the same time my country is offering literally no info on new covid boosters. Last updates are from March 2023.

I hate it here.

The over exploitation of Africa made the world miss out on the edo period of Japan's equivalent in Africa. In an alternate history Africa would be known for really cool shit that would make people want to have magical powers and fight alongside lions or something. Like steampunk could have taken place in Ethiopia instead of Britain. I feel the same about the middle east if it wasn't ransacked, razed, and tortured. The people that made Algebra probably could have made anime first.

Playing Cyberpunk (now that I finally have a PC that can run it)

a) The vending machine in V's apartment is probably the thing that stood out the most to me in terms of hypercapitalist dystopia

b) At least this dystopia seems to have 3rd spaces and a sense of community, I think modern suburbia is way more alienated from one another because of single-family zoning etc, you can't just leave your house and hang out with people. A part of me genuinely looks at these cyberpunk slums and thinks "man, must be nice to live so close to everyone" even though I know that their life sucks in pretty much every way

It's that time of the year again, heading for the Fete de l'Huma in france-cool tonight

Great beer, awesome food including many vegan options, information and music stands from almost every union and leftist org in France and abroad (including the CPC lmao), and great music. Never fails to give me hope bloomer

Tonight I'm especially happy to go try a band that I missed in another festival previously; they're comrades, feminists, and have an awesome name: Les Vulves Assassines (The Murderous Vulvas)

[–] Huldra@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Man every time I wake up and go to xitter there's a new miniature food discourse on there, this time I literally dont even know what the fuck is going on, some american I follow is trying to dunk on comically wide and flat german schnitzels but that should literally be like american appealing, its breaded and fried meat idk what the problem is.

Idk if its offensive to the american brain that its comically thin rather than comically thick or something.

well I don't think I have covid, or maybe I do? I dunno, I can still smell and taste. also for whatever reason the pain stopped so I dunno. I can look at stuff with light again, since the light was really hurting my eyes. my headache also went away, and im also not shivering and feeling cold as fuck anymore. except im still really tired and exhausted. I dunno, I "love" coming down with a random ass mystery chills/shivering, or a fever I think? and also pain. it just ??? what happened.

[–] SunsetFruitbat@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

nevermind the pain and cold, coming back. so back to sleep

the new season of futurama sucks so bad. it's genuinely amazing how they managed to make several episodes worse than the eyephone one from the last time they trotted out this IP's corpse

I was gonna come up with a cool pun or a funny acronym but I can't be bothered I just wanna say that the Unity CEO should throw himself off a cliff

[–] TheCaconym@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This especially sucks because, credit where credit is due, the existence of unity and their efforts to maintain a linux port did help gaming on linux quite a bit (less so than Valve's dxvk / proton efforts of course; and both far less so than the thousands of volunteers - I submitted a few patches myself - that contributed to wine for three decades, finally bringing us there)

Looking at the upside at least this should ultimately make Godot / Ogre / other free software projects more prevalent

Watching Fionna and Cake and Im really loving it lol. Idk how they keep doing it but the adventure time folks really keep making banger after banger.

The only bad part so far has been that they recast Prismo, which was apparently the fault of Kumail's agent telling them no, even though he really loves Prismo, so they fucked up bad lmao. The new guy doing his voice does a decent job but it's just not the same.

Dunno if this is an intentional point but I love how in Gundam Zeta the issue of child soldiers has gone from a moral one that gets swiftly brushed aside to just 100% a matter of practicality like "damn, all our child soldier prodigys need father figures and we didn't teach any of that in officer school, this is tough."
