Image is of many Hamas soldiers supervising the handing over of Israeli hostages to cars heading out of the Gaza Strip.

After 15 months of genocide - and resistance to it - the Israeli regime realized that they could not win a military victory against Hamas, and were forced to sign a humiliating ceasefire in order to get their hostages returned.

With much of Syria under the control of Al-Qaeda, and an increasing level of covert infiltration into Lebanon, the crisis in the Middle East is not over, and we may still be in its beginning stages, as the center of hegemony continues its gradual shift away from the United States. Their navy, once considered the best in the world, is likely also not very happy about their ships and aircraft carriers being forced to retreat by Yemen, one of the poorest countries; and all eyes are on Iran, who has, over the last year and a half, demonstrated a newfound confidence and strength to directly strike Israel.

The recovery for Gaza will take, at a minimum, decades; it could indeed never fully recovery to even how it was before, considering it is not in Israel's interests to see their concentration camps recover. But Hamas has proven to be steadfast and the tunnel network has proven its resilience, despite facing some of the most powerful conventional bombing in history. This shows that Palestine's liberation is a when, not an if; and hopefully a much sooner "when" than expected before October 7th.

Press release SG/SM/22531 from the Secretary-General, 2024-01-24.
Statement on the Secretary-Generals website, with Arabic translation.

Strongly Condemning Houthi De Facto Authorities’ Arbitrary Detention of United Nations Personnel in Yemen, Secretary-General Demands Their Immediate, Unconditional Release

The following statement by UN Secretary-General António Guterres was issued today:

I strongly condemn the arbitrary detention by the Houthi de facto authorities on 23 January of seven additional United Nations personnel in areas under their control.

I demand the immediate and unconditional release of those detained on Thursday, as well as the personnel from the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society and diplomatic missions arbitrarily detained since June 2024 and those held since 2021 and 2023. Their continued arbitrary detention is unacceptable.

The personnel of the UN and its partners must not be targeted, arrested or detained while carrying out their duties for the UN for the benefit of the people they serve. The safety and security of UN personnel and property must be guaranteed.

The continued targeting of UN personnel and its partners negatively impacts our ability to assist millions of people in need in Yemen. The Houthis must deliver on their previous commitments and act in the best interests of the Yemeni people and the overall efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.

The United Nations will continue to work through all possible channels to secure the safe and immediate release of those arbitrarily detained. I welcome the collective support of international partners, non-governmental organizations and all those working to support the people of Yemen in these efforts.

UN News, 2025-01-24, "World News in Brief: More UN staffers detained in Yemen, education hit by climate crisis, Nigeria aid plan"

Parts relevant to Yemen quoted

The UN has suspended all official movements by its teams into and out of Houthi-held areas of Yemen, after more UN staffers were detained on Thursday.

The de facto rulers of much of the country, including the capital Sana’a, released the crew of a merchant ship who had been held for more than a year, earlier this week.

The move raised hopes that more than 60 staff from the UN, international organizations and diplomatic missions already being held by the Houthis over the past year, might be released.

Friday’s safety measure announced by Julien Harneis, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, comes as the organization faces mounting security challenges in its operations in the region.

The Houthis and the internationally-recognized Government have been fighting for control of the country in what has become a wider regional proxy war, for over a decade.

Security measure

“Yesterday, the de facto authorities in Sana’a detained additional UN personnel working in areas under their control,” Mr. Harneis said.

“To ensure the security and safety of all its staff, the United Nations has suspended all official movements into and within areas under the de facto authorities' control…this measure will remain in place until further notice.”

Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq elaborated on the response later on Friday, highlighting the UN's ongoing efforts: “Our officials in Yemen are actively engaging with senior representatives of the de facto authorities, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all UN personnel and partners.”

The detentions mark a troubling escalation for humanitarian operations in Yemen, where access and security remain critical concerns.

The UN continues to emphasise the importance of upholding the safety and neutrality of its personnel to ensure lifesaving aid reaches those in need.

Mozambique's Chapo ~~Trap House~~ sworn in as president after disputed election - Reuters

MAPUTO, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Daniel Chapo of Mozambique's long-ruling Frelimo party was sworn in as president on Wednesday at a sparsely attended ceremony after months of protests against his disputed election victory. A local civil society monitoring group says more than 300 people have been killed in clashes with security forces since the Oct. 9 vote, which the opposition says Frelimo won through vote-rigging and Western observers say was not free and fair.

Frelimo denies accusations of electoral fraud. It has ruled Mozambique since the end of the war against Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, clinging on throughout a 15-year civil war that killed a million people before a 1992 truce. Chapo told a group of about 1,500 supporters from a stage in the capital Maputo that social and political stability would be his government's top priority.

He also promised to shrink the size of the government by reducing the number of ministries, tackle youth unemployment and prioritise health and education. The city centre was largely deserted with a heavy police and army presence, Reuters witnesses said. Cyril Ramaphosa, president of neighbouring South Africa, was one of the few heads of state attending Chapo's inauguration.

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who official results say came second to Chapo in the presidential election, returned from self-imposed exile last week and has urged his supporters to continue demonstrating. The post-election protests amount to the largest against Frelimo in Mozambique's history and have affected foreign businesses operating in the resource-rich southern African country of 35 million people. They have also disrupted cross-border trade and forced some to flee to neighbouring countries.

After the end of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel this morning, the Lebanese people are bravely confronting the the Israeli military occupation units that remain in south-eastern Lebanon, walking right up to Israeli tanks, going ahead of the Lebanese army and past their fortifications to confront the Zionists, and returning to their towns and homes. This has resulted in confrontations between the Israeli military and Lebanese civilians with Israel shooting at the Lebanese people to try stop them from returning, with ~~15 dead and 83 injured~~ 22 dead and 123 injured, including 9 minors and a paramedic, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. This has also forced the Lebanese army to actually fulfill their mandate and protect the people, as the people went ahead of the army to confront the occupation. One Lebanese army soldier is also set to have been killed.

There are too many videos and photos to post individually, but they are astounding to see.

My favourite two, very contrasting emotions:

The Middle East Observer twitter account has compiled a bunch of videos and photos on his account, if you want to see more. Even a makeshift shrine for the martyrs has been erected.

Lebanese Army shows why Hezbollah exists in the first place.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 40 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

And today was an act by the southern Lebanese people to actually protect the resistance and Hezbollah. They know Hezbollah cannot fire a shot right now (situation internally in Lebanon is complex), so the people go and confront the occupying Israeli forces themselves, while unarmed, showing that they are prepared to risk their life and die for their land, just as Hezbollah is with their guns and missiles. The people of the south and the resistance are unified in their goals and actions.

Imagine if, in an alternate reality, the ceasefire agreement ended and no one confronted the occupation. What message would that send to both Israel and the armed resistance in Hezbollah (and all the groups outside of Lebanon of course)? In such an alternate reality, Israel would feel emboldened, the resistance would feel as if they are distanced from the people. Instead we live in a reality where the people did confront the Israeli occupation, so the resistance knows that the people support them and are prepared to risk their lives for the resistance, just as the resistance is prepared to risk their lives for the people (and did so for many days, at a great sacrifice). They are unified.

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can you expand on the complex internal situation? I recall Hezbollah putting out statements implying the conflict would reignite if the occupation continued

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 15 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

It's to do with the ceasefire agreement and it's clauses, UNSC 1701, the political situation in Lebanon with the new president, and the US funding the Lebanese army, and how all this effects Hezbollah's position and ways to respond. Remember, just a week ago we had the Lebanese army destroying Hezbollah fortifications and confiscating their weapons under Israeli pressure, as Israel would bomb these positions themselves if the Lebanese army failed to tackle them. And this was encouraged (and permitted) under the ceasefire agreement by the mediators (US and France). Now, the Lebanese army is stepping in to protect Lebanese civilians (after being forced to by the civilians actions themselves in returning to their homes) and standing in front of Israeli tanks, confronting them. It's hard to explain in a single comment.

I do find the mental contortions needed for the "leak" propaganda narrative to be fairly interesting. China is so weak that the US can defeat it on its own doorstep if it tries to reunite its renegade island and yet so much a threat that a pathogen that brought down the entire planet to its knees was merely "leaked" from its research labs. You have US congressmen and think tanks fantasizing about how they'll use "tactical" nukes on Shanghai and "blow up" the Three Gorges Dam if the Chinese do a Pearl Harbor on Guam or Kadena AFB in occupied Ryukyus and harm one single precious American soldier - and yet over a million Americans, the largest single mass casualty event in American history, greater than even the Civil War, is supposedly from a Chinese leaked pathogen - and nothing happened in terms of Burger Reich "reprisal."

It's such a gimmick and you can tell the only point of all this is just to ensure that whatever pop COVID-19 history books plopped down on Barnes & Nobles shelves decades down the line will be required to mention this "China bad" angle.

The mental gymnastics allow them to believe COVID is just the flu and we don't need to take it seriously anymore, but also it's a bioweapon that killed over a million USAmericans.

They’re gonna have you log your Apple Watch health metrics continuously and price the drugs accordingly with their proprietary AI algorithm to maximize profit. You’re gonna have to subscribe to a bunch of health tracking services provided by Apple, Amazon, Meta and Google just to have access to drug dispensaries.

I think I saw something recently about one of those betterhealth like therapy scams using AI and it telling people to harm themselves.

Donald Trump in fiery call with Denmark’s prime minister over Greenland

Donald Trump insisted he was serious in his determination to take over Greenland in a fiery telephone call with Denmark’s prime minister, according to senior European officials.

...

They added that Trump had been aggressive and confrontational following the Danish prime minister’s comments that the island was not for sale, despite her offer of more co-operation on military bases and mineral exploitation.
“It was horrendous,” said one of the people. Another added: “He was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious, and potentially very dangerous.”
The details of the call are likely to deepen European concerns that Trump’s return to power will strain transatlantic ties more than ever, as the US president heaps pressure on allies to give up territory.

“The intent was very clear. They want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,” said one person briefed on the call. Another said: “The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.”
A former Danish official added: “It was a very tough conversation. He threatened specific measures against Denmark such as targeted tariffs.”

https://archive.is/ZVupw

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

If you're going to include the unnamed the former official, then feel like this part is relevant to quote too.

The Danish prime minister’s office said it did “not recognise the interpretation of the conversation given by anonymous sources”.
Greenland, home to just 57,000 people, is an entry point to new shipping routes gradually opening up through the Arctic; it also boasts abundant but hard to access minerals.

“President Trump has been clear that the safety and security of Greenland is important to the United States as China and Russia make significant investments throughout the Arctic region,” a White House National Security Council spokesperson said.
“The President is committed to not only protecting US interests in the Arctic but also working with Greenland to ensure mutual prosperity for both nations.”

Trump threatened in early January to impose duties on Denmark if it opposed him on Greenland. He also declined to rule out using military force to take control of the island.
“People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it but, if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security,” Trump said at a press conference days before taking office.
“I’m talking about protecting the free world,” he added. “You have China ships all over the place. You have Russian ships all over the place. We’re not letting that happen.”

And especially this

Múte Egede, Greenland’s prime minister, has repeatedly stressed that the island’s inhabitants want independence rather than US — or Danish — citizenship. But he has welcomed US business interest in mining and tourism.
