Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Cuba cant make them leave. There isn't an ally who can back them up and go toe to toe with them like there was for a brief period between 1950s and the late 1980s..

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2002/01/how-did-the-u-s-get-a-naval-base-in-cuba.html

The US took the area by force during the Spanish-American War, and then signed a "lease" with no end date with the Cuban government at the time.

I bet every time Cuba says they want to take it back, the US says "Yeah? You and what army?"

Quite simple: They refuse to leave and Cuba can't make them.

That’s what happens when you just click through - you have legally agreed plus agree to binding arbitration for all future disagreements , in a venue of their choice.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

It certainly helps when the person clicking through is your flunkie

in summary the US is not the "greatest country in the world" it's just the stronggest bully

[–] guy_threepwood@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Well yeah, it has inferior potassium.

[–] Soulifix@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

And they're the kind of bully where the rest of the world just disappointingly sighs and has to deal with because they know Russia is absolutely no better and China is meh.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The rest of the world sighs because american are crazy and have used nukes before and would do it again. Bully strategy. China and Russia are just more of the same.

The US military has a strong no first use policy with nuclear weapons that has been in place since the beginning of the cold war. They would absolutely not do it again unless someone else launched first

From some perspectives, those are the same things. Those perspectives suck, but they exist.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

gratest = biggest army?! That's a very USA perspective, but a perspective nonetheless

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Its one of the greatest bullies... every big asshole does its own part in this shit

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The American government sends the Cuban government a check every year for the "rent".

Unless something has changed, Cuba has never cashed a rent check, because they don't want an American base.

It's incredibly fucked up, but it's the only A&W combination Taco Bell in Cuba

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Previous Cuban governments cashed the rent check; the current government hasn't.

[–] wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes it's true, the fascists did not mind taking American money. Surprising!

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

They accidentally deposited one cheque in the 50's.

It's not like its any money on a government scale. Hell, even on a personal level it's cheap as fuck for an annual rent. My small duplex has a highers rent than what America pays in rent for gitmo; ~4000$

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is an acute example of the whole world's problem with American military bases on foreign soil. They want them to leave but can't make them.

[–] rbesfe@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

Djibouti is very content to have the protection that a foreign military base offers. That's why they let China build one too

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Because when you have missiles, you get to make the rules, and they don't have to be consistent.
