Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

Can I vent here? I am going to vent...I have been involved with a year long fight to get custody of my children that has cost me literally every penny I have had saved while the other side has basically infinite money...

and, some days, it is hard to get over the fact that you are not meant to interact with the American legal system unless you are wealthy. It hurts so bad that everything that you need to actually get a judge to listen to you costs untold thousands of dollars...and then there is more money on top of that just to get that evidence in court. And I just found out that this report that I paid a ton of money for (which has put me right back to asking for help in mutual aid) contains falsified information of things I never did or never said...but it is now a legal document, and if I want to fight that it will be thousands more dollars to even create a shred of reasonable doubt of the words of this expert.

The bit take away here is, if you are not wealthly, never, under any circumstance, engage with the legal system.

Gonna do the weekly Capital reading posts this year, haven't done something like that before but I assume it'll be pretty easy now that we already have a full year in the backlog I can draw from theory-gary

Just made the post, if you want to be added to the mention list, go ahead and let me know!

Listen up, fuckos.

When I ask "should we rename honey to 'bee's milk'" at 2AM and I don't get a single response. That makes you look stupid, not me.

Okay so we all know the "witchy girl in the alps looking for her cat" tweet, but like, for real, what if? What if there was a game just as introspective as Disco Elysium, but centered on spirituality and religion rather than politics? What if it was about trying to find meaning under capitalism, and how capitalism changes and breaks people's philosophies? What if the voices in your head were various gnostic and pagan figures? I mean, imagine Catholic Guilt commentating on a conversation about self-expression. The game could be centered around a youth hostel or something in the the Alps, where you talk to various travellers and adventurers and wasters. There could be a Lockheed Martin child who gets really into spirituality as an aesthetic, a DMT bro who discovered empathy because of drugs, a really judgemental Protestant couple from England, and a local Catholic priest. Honestly the exploration of religion and philosophy done in a way that Discol Elysium explored politics has a huge amount of potential. The idea gets me really excited and I want to write this now

I'm not sure if I'm giving approachable or what but people seem to pick me out of a crowd of people waiting for public transit to ask questions like 'does this go to x' or 'how do I get to y' doesn't matter if there's 10 people waiting I'm the guy to ask apparently

Doesn't matter if I have headphones on even, they'll walk past other people to ask me. Not that I mind or anything I'm just not sure why it keeps happening ya know?

A lot of rural America seems very charming to me. I would really like to live in an area where there is massive wilderness of mountains and forests and lakes, where you can really get lost in woods. I would like to have a slow-paced lifestyle where I work a straightforward job and see my friends in the evenings for a beer and a bareque. I would love to go hiking and camping in those massive national parks and just hang out there naked for as long as I could.

Unfortunately it all comes with the very massive downside of being in the USA, and I would have to live around Americans. Oh well, it's nice to romanticise at least.

Working hard to work myself up to finally get started on my next game. It's going to be a kind of single-player roguelite survival game where you can play as a series of unlockable alien creatures who explore a world covered in ancient ruins, unlocking the mysteries that led to the creation of said ruins as well as the subjugation and exploitation of the life which exists on the planet that you're playing in.

Gonna call it "Kill All Rich People"

(not really lol but I'm fuckin sick of subtext)

I'm honestly just kind of starting to unironically actually hate straight people the way Westboro Baptist hates gay people. Not even so I can goad people into doing things I can sue them for; they just piss me off that badly.

There needs to be stronger slurs for them than "Breeder".

The clip of the Greek coast guard person getting interviewed by the BBC asking if they loaded migrants into boats and abandoned them at sea*, then leaving the room forgetting to get rid of their mic and then saying on a call

I haven’t told them too much? What do you think? Yes, it’s crystal clear, but what should I tell them? When you look at it from the outside, it’s very clear, isn’t it? It’s not nuclear physics. I don’t know why they did it in broad daylight. It’s clearly illegal. Obviously, obviously illegal. It’s an international crime.

Indescribably eu-cool
