I am emigrating from the U.S. because my daughter is queer and I don't think she is safe under Trump. She won't be totally safe in the UK either, I understand that, but it's as safe as I can get her right now.

As I said, I can legally work in the UK. I have citizenship through my father. I am applying right and left, but any additional help would be really wonderful. I've been going to some recommended sites- Indeed, Glassdoor, Guardian Jobs and the UK government's job websites, but I am hoping someone here might also have connections because I really don't want to deplete our savings and whatever we get from selling things like my car while I look for work.

I have spent most of my professional life in the video and audio production industries. I had my own small post-production studio in Los Angeles for 10 years. I have worked as a video editor, audio editor and sound designer for multiple prestigious clients and also for some low-budget film companies.

I also have experience as a news videographer, I've done a lot of TV and radio advertising work, and I have an impressive list of people I've done voice over work for (I specialize in characters and accents).

On top of that, although this is not on my CV because it generally doesn't lead to work, I have 15 years' experience doing standup comedy and comedy writing. I never got famous, but I almost got to be a part of a reboot of National Lampoon Magazine which ended up never happening, so that was cool.

Anyway, if anyone here can help me out, I will happily send you my CV. Obviously, I'm not going to doxx myself and put it here on Lemmy, but if you send me a PM with an email address, I can send it there.

Thanks.

(I hope this is okay, mods.)

Speaking as someone who is in no way an authority on anything, I'd say this fails the 'shits and giggles' validity test for 'casual', and therefore similar posts should be discouraged in the future. That said, it's all cool, I should just shut my yap, and it'll only be a problem if we get inundated with requests for jobs from fleeing sceptics.

Plus, also, best of luck in your move. We have a small handful of absolute arseholes over here who are anti-queer but for the most part people don't really mind what your sexual orientation is as long as you keep it off the top deck of a 91 bus between Kingsway and Crouch End.

Thank you. And if you know a more fitting community to post it in, please let me know where.

There isn't a specific one, which suggests we might need a UK Jobs community. I suppose it could have been rephrased as a question for Ask UK but I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, thanks.

The only brits I know have all come over to Canadaland, so all I can offer is best wishes for a speedy transition and a resettling somewhere that feels safe. Promise you'll update us as to the acclimation process.

I'll do my best, thank you. I've been over several times, and I probably watch more British TV than American, but in many ways, I have a very 1950s view of things because my father emigrated in 1959.

No personal experience or connections for you but we have just built a new film studio in Reading, Berkshire which is owned by a US company Shadowbox Studios.

May be worth seeing if you can get a job at Shadowbox in the US and being open to a possible transfer?

As others have said the UK is one of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries, your family would be welcomed here.

Thank you, I will look it up!

The new UK Studio is called Shinfield Studios. (Just realised I didn’t name it in my last message)

I never signed that silly independence declaration!

You passed the 'has a sense a humour' test. Welcome :)

I'm in the live events side of video.
Where about a are you heading (roughly), and I'll see if I can reach out to some production companies or agencies or whatever that might be looking for freelance video production work.
Get some feelers out for ya.
It probably won't be glamorous, just corporate videos for/of conferences - as that's most of the work I do. But might be a foot in the door.

I will live anywhere I can get a job. We have places to stay in London and Bristol, but I'm willing to locate anywhere from Orkney to the Isle of Wight. Anything to keep my kid safe.

Can’t offer guidance or links…just wanted to say best wishes and hope it works out.

Aside from a few knobs people don’t have a problem with who you do it with here.

jobs.ac.uk and search for media technician, av support, av manager, film technician, sound technician etc etc.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thank you, I'm already way ahead of you there. 🙂

I was hoping for a networking thing on Lemmy.

[–] FourPacketsOfPeanuts@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't think Lemmy has critical mass unfortunately. To get a lot of eyeballs on something is one of the very few reasons I'd look at reddit's /r/AskUK or /r/London or one of the specific UK job subs.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Probably not, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

No idea what it is like in your industry, but in mine, IT, i get plenty of offers from recruitment agencies and headhunters through linkedin, even though i am not active there at all. Good luck!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I hate LinkedIn but I may have to go there and see. Thanks.

[–] Docus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I hate it too. Signed up ages ago to look at work related posts, still check that once a month or so but never post anything myself. But recruiters seem to regularly scan profiles. And, sample size of one, but my company does not really advertise jobs anymore, they still recruit regularly but mainly through recruitment agencies these days. For your industry, i’m guessing you’re looking at London, perhaps Manchester, for location. Both are more expensive than average to live in

https://www.timeline.tv/ might be suitable.

It's more on the technical side, but could suit you.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Great! Thank you!

Are Jobserve and Jobsite still around in the UK?

Best of luck! You won’t find LA weather, but London is pretty vibrant and cosmopolitan, and hopefully a good redoubt.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Oh no worries, I live in Indiana now. We moved when my daughter was younger so she could be with her grandparents.

British weather is far preferable.
