I don't want to be the judge here or anything. Just wondering if a religious sub belongs in an instance with nothing anti-science as a rule. If its fine by everyone and the admin, its fine by me. I'd just block the community. Just felt wrong to see a Catholicism community in local.

I won't go down voting the community or anything, we've got enough of those people here

I already talked to the mod to make sure they understand they instance they operate in. They explained they understand the expectations. If there's anything anti-science or otherwise reactionary, we'll deal with it then.

Oh that's perfect. All good then πŸ‘

Honestly, I don’t think we should restrict communities just because they are based on religion. If they run afoul of behavioral rules, that’s one thing, but plenty of our members ascribe to some sort of religion personally and don’t cause problems.

I am a Thelemite and have thought about moving that community here since I don’t use my world account much. I think it would suck if I wasn’t allowed to do that even though the community would not be breaking any stated rules.

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

I wholeheartedly agree, but most people are quick to restrict opinions that go against their own, so communities like these are going to have a very hard time coming to life on instances like these (to say nothing of the instance, i love it here)

don't forget the repeated child abuse and coverups

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Wow, I was literally thinking of deleting the community yesterday, and now I see this post! I'm the creator of that community. The posts do get immediately downvoted, so I assume that people feel uncomfortable with a religious community here on dbzer0. I will definitely remove it once I get to my computer. Just wanted to say. I am definitely not anti-science and I am a normal person who got converted a few months ago (used to be an agnostic). I am still a diehard leftie and I love astronomy, cosmology, I read science fiction and pirate!!! Catholics come in all shapes and sizes. However, I do agree that this instance might not be the place for a Cath community and therefore I will remove it.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The downvotes are probably irrespective of the instance, but indeed, I don't think this particular instance is the most fertile ground for theism, even though technically religion is not incompatible with anarchism.

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

It'll probably be more useful to try and revitalise some of the other christian lemmy communities. Thank you for being understanding, though.

A bit late, but I just want to say, you are doing it right. I hope you find a new home for your community.

If people want less bigoted religions, then they will need to support initiatives by reasonable people to steer those religions.

Otherwise, if all reasonable people leave a religion, all that remains will be a cesspool of toxicity and ignorance.

No thats perfectly fine. I didn't mean to make you feel unwelcome. Keep going, early downvotes has always been an issue on dbzer0.

The Catholic church isn't anti-science, some anti-science folks are Catholic

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 months ago

Exactly! Us younger Catholic folks are usually not anti-science. cough cough "it's the boomers and gen x most of the time"

Religion is literally the opposite of Science. Religion is 100% made up. (Do we still build temples to Zeus? no). Science is evidence based. Religion is used to 'explain' all the things (wrongly) that Science eventually figured out. The closest thing you will ever find to god is the Sun, without it we perish. Also, it was the original worshiped 'god'. Just food for thought.

[–] within_epsilon@beehaw.org 13 points 2 months ago

Science is sometimes used like religion. We called it "Proof by Authority". Thank goodness for science having testability requirements to show the authority is a fool.

[–] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Lucky for me, I’m still part of a religion that worships the sun. We are finally vindicated! /s

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I guess that depends on whether you accept the existence of other sun gods.

[–] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The solar energy is One, my child. /s

One of the hottest and brightest religions!

Meet hot bright religions near you!

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's like asking someone who likes apples if they'd accept a pomme, apfel, manzana, or яблоко.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think it's more like asking an apple fan if they believe other fruits exist?

Not really, there are lots of gods, sun gods are a specific subset. Different "sun gods" are just different names and attributions to the sun, like different languages have different names for apples.

[–] whalebiologist@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

and science becomes it's own religion surprisingly quickly if you are not careful.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This can be true. Anything can be a 'religion' if you become unreasonably obsessed. Science can never be a religion because the whole point of science is to always question, and the point of religion is to never question.

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think you're mixing up primitive mysticisms and the modern variants of religion. There are, actually, some things both science and christianity struggle to explain. Of course, both say they do, but a fool-proof argument isn't readily available. If you're open to it, approaching the fine-tuning argument from both the atheist and theistic perspectives is extremely interesting. Both have very good points.

[–] Robust_Mirror@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but is there something you can name that religion does explain without relying on faith of some kind? I would never claim science has all the answers, but if I'm going to attempt to take religion seriously it has to start by giving at least a single answer.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Science does not have all the answers. We utilize Science to find answers, with valid evidence, to the questions we have. Religion just makes up stories to explain things that are actually untrue. Science is doing the work to get a true answer. Religion is just a 'feeling'.

[–] Robust_Mirror@aussie.zone 1 points 2 months ago

I don't disagree.

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Well, no. Religion is nothing without faith. You have to be personally called to that faith in order to be able to explain things to yourself in a religious manner. I'll recommend this video, though.

[–] Robust_Mirror@aussie.zone 2 points 2 months ago

Thanks, I'll check it out later tonight.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No one is ever "called to faith". You either buy the lie or you don't. 'faith' does not exist. 'faith' is your willingness to believe that which is not real. It's called lying to yourself.

[–] LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Thanks bro, I didn't realise that. lmao

We don't know the first God, Trees are just as likely for instance l, they're nigh immortal, feed your family, and provides shelter

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

As long as they are respectful and follow the rules I don't see why they couldn't be here. We haven't kicked out the anti-piracy communities or the Anti-AI communities for going against the spirit of the instance but still following our rules so I don't see why this should be any different, as long as they continue to follow the rules of course.

[–] arin@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Just move them to an anti science instance?
