As a PHP developer, why did no one tell me I am supposed to not give a fuck about FOSS??

[–] inspxtr@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I'm confused, and maybe naive. How are CSS/HTML and JS frameworks web stuff on the "Doesn't give a shit about open source" axis?

[–] EmasXP@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Was thinking the same about PHP :D Maybe because the license allows it to be used in proprietary software?

[–] kosama@socel.net 2 points 1 year ago

@garfaagel @inspxtr I think he’s saying that if you use open standards on closed source/“if it ain’t broke” systems? Kinda like how Apple mostly takes from Open Source with little give back to the communities it benefits from??

[–] Wereduck@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah I feel like that's pretty squarely next to debian as traditional and open source.

[–] hadesflames@vlemmy.net 9 points 1 year ago

This literally makes zero sense at all.

So... A typical compass meme.

PHP isn't open source? Damn, for some reason I can't take back my contribution.

Marxism-Leninism-Debianism ftw. But I also need thigh highs.

What's wrong with notepad.exe?

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Join the future, switch to notepad++

[–] tiny_electron@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

It is not as good an IDE as PowerPoint imo, hard to be productive with the mere notepad. Not even mentionning the lack of comic sans ms /s

“JS frameworks like node”

[–] egg360@vlemmy.net 1 points 1 year ago

Aren't a lot of open source libraries and languages initially open sourced from faang? I'm using Airflow at work, which is a descendant of something Facebook open sourced. Pretty sure all of them open sourced a bunch of of their data center designs too

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Initially open-sourced? No.

FAANG jumped on the open source bandwagon once they realised they could not complete with the Linux dev ecosystem, and so hastily implemented drivers and other open source tech built on existing FOSS libraries and concepts.

They've contributed a lot, but they built upon existing frameworks pioneered by linux/FSF

[–] srpwnd@lemmy.one -1 points 1 year ago

Airflow actually started as internal project at Airbnb.

[–] darcy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

holy c in lib right

[–] Dathknight@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Now I have an existential crisis...

At work I develop for windows servers with vs code, which I also use at home on my Arch powered ThinkPad ...

WHAT AM I!?

[–] qwerty@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

The enlightened centrist.
