But we tend to find ourselves agreeing more often with parties that espouse liberal values, internationalism and centrist economics, such as the Democrats in the US, Liberal Democrats in the UK, FDP in Germany, Renaissance/MoDem in France, the Liberal Party in Canada, and so on. **Further reading** - I’m a neoliberal. It ain't much, but it's ~~honest work~~ taco trucks
This is an interesting set up. Would it be better to use the microblog as a DT? It's formatted a little differently, with the text box at the top of the page. I dunno, I'm new here.
oh god, you guys are here too.
Nuked my Reddit history yesterday and I'll be deleting it soon. I've mostly been enjoying the grass outside, but I can't say I haven't been missing you ridiculous group of goofballs.
Kbin having the comment box at the bottom of the page REALLY is frustrating for the DT
Good morning DT, how are we doing today?
Pretty good. Debating whether to stay home and cook dinner, or go for a quick bike ride and then buy takeout. How 'bout you?
Bike ride bike ride!
I'm okay, watching Victor Wemby make his Spurs NBA debut in the summer league.
Good morning liberals and hope you're having a good weekend.
Also, has anyone seen our fearless mod @Crawfish? Their last comment was three weeks ago saying that kbin was everything they needed in a Reddit alternative...
Howdy!
Good to see our stalwart content provider is here in force.
I apologize I wasn’t logging in as much recently, but I was still browsing. I’m also a very active lurker on the mastodon server. Feel free to join that instance too.
To be perfectly honest I didn’t realize people were still using this! There didn’t seem to be much interest. But I’m glad you are here pal.
The messiah!
How are you finding the Mastodon instance? I came to kbin looking for a discussion board-type Reddit replacement - never really warmed to Twitter in the first place.
https://mastodo.neoliber.al/home
Yeah I get that. I stopped using Twitter about 10 years ago. But there seems to be a solid group of around 15-20 regular posters making it feel like a never-ending chronological DailyThread. I still don’t go on Reddit really so it’s helping me get that DT fix
Do y’all think I should be making a new one of these every day? We don’t get much traffic yet, so it doesn’t seem entirely necessary.
Also, do y’all have any ideas of what you’d like to see in our little magazine going forward?
No I don't think so. There is a comment here like every other day. Maybe a weekly one?
Agree with @FuckFashMods that a weekly discussion thread would be plenty until this place grows up.
I think we just need to get content and discussion going here. At the moment about three of us are 90% of the posts and comments - if we can get that up to (say) 8-10 as a first milestone then this place will feel a lot more active. I've noticed the number of subscribers gradually ticking up (showing 56 at the moment, but I think the count may only display subscribers from the same instance?) - we just need regular content and discussion to convert more of those subscribers to commenters!
I guess we can think also about what distinguishes this place from the content you'd get on general politics subs. I noticed the Vox article on car ownership in the US generated more upvotes than other stuff I've put here (though the margins are hardly big) - maybe we think about what topics dear to neoliberals are poorly-served by other news/politics subs.
Could you promote this magazine on the Mastodon instance? I think Mastodon users can subscribe to a kbin magazine (from what I've seen elsewhere on kbin) so might be we can draw in some friends from there too.
I’ve mentioned this magazine on the mastodon a few times in the past but I’ll try shilling it again, especially now that there are 50+ members.
I definitely appreciate you and the other active members that continue to bring content!
I should be doing more of that myself, honestly. I’ll try to do better going forward.
Maybe some I’ll also put together a simple anonymous poll to get general demographic info we can play off of too.

Gotta love that 2/3 of the top comments on the DT right now are just me bitching about reddit, lol (and this comment makes it 3/4!)
I'm trying my best but it feels like this sub is fading away already. What can we do about it?
Theres just like 2 or 3 of us lol
Unless we can get to like 10-15 users, there's not much going on :(
Yup.
Good question, and I hope its not too late lol
I am not entirely sure except keep trying. Boosting comments and posts should help with visibility, at least.
I am excited to see a reddit alternative emerge and would love to see something like r/Neoliberal in the fediverse, too.
I remember when I joined r/Neoliberal on reddit it was a relatively small community (around 16,000 I want to say?) and no where near as big as it is now. Still though, that was much bigger than what we are working with here.
Thanks - we'll keep plugging away! I joined r/neoliberal when it was still pretty small too and it became one of my go-to favourite subs.
I'm really hopeful we get to that point here too. The number of subscribers is still slowly growing - the more we post/upvote/boost/comment, the more subscribers will come in, the more content they'll generate themselves, etc. It'll take time but I'm hopeful.
@Crawfish are you still there?
It’s been about a month since this party started, and while things are looking a little slow I think it’d be great if we could build a community here that advocated for free trade, open borders and taco trucks on every corner lol.
@Crawfish - as you're not here much, can I suggest you add a few of us who are active as co-mods? I worry otherwise that with no active mod on the magazine then its growth could end up being limited - especially important now that it's finally coming to life and we've got multiple regular posters here.
I would be happy to be a mod here.
I have been thinking about making a mastodon account for mastodo.neoliber.al to go find Crawfish, but i think its invite only. I don’t think they realize their is activity here.
Also, if that server is active we might be able to get some of them to help over here, too.
But yeah, we need a mod lol
I made a post in the mastodon server for r/neoliberal asking if anyone can help us find them under @CoffeeAddict username. Hopefully, he will see it lol
Okay, so how do we bring this community to life?
We need to convince more of our fellow shitlibs to make the jump from reddit. But until then... horrifying as it is, we'll need to keep posting content ourselves.
There are some pretty militant pro-reddit users in that sub, that just seem to love the reddit app and have no problem with anything that's gone down there.
Unfortunately, the sub has a real problem with knee-jerking against whatever the majority of redditors are doing. So if most redditors are against the API changes, some users are gonna reflexively defend the company just to be contrarian. One of the more frustrating aspects of the community which I hope doesn't get ported over here if/when the migration starts in earnest.
Okay, I'd been debating whether arr neoliberal has actually been drifting to the right on social issues, or if it just seemed that way to me because I was always to the left of the median user on those issues.
After seeing blatant xenophobia get dozens of upvotes in posts on the riots in France, yeah, I can confidently say that sub is absolutely drifting to the right. That shit would get downvoted to hell two years ago, now it's the people pushing back on it who are getting downvoted.
God, I absolutely love the idea of the fediverse, and I've found some really cool niche communities here... but the sheer number of tankie posts is disgusting. Don't wanna go back to reddit, but also if I have to report every other post on my front page for "jokingly" advocating murder I don't know if it's worth staying much longer.
I haven't had too many tankie posts, but they are definitely coming out of the woodwork with the submarine incident. I've just been block the more egregious zines, not like I didn't have to do that with reddit as well.
So are the mods on r\neoliberal just not even trying to remove all the disgustingly racist comments around the recent riots in France, then? People victim blaming a seventeen year old for being executed by the police are getting dozens or even hundreds of upvotes, for Christs' sake.
Honestly, I've been annoyed by the mods' inability or unwillingness to crack down on casual racism and sexism for a long time, but for a long time the pros outweighed the cons to me in terms of staying on the sub. And, to be blunt, there really weren't any good alternatives-- for years there, it was the only center-left forum left on reddit with any kind of activity.
Well, now there are. The subreddit mods should probably consider that, going forwards.
Victim blaming is one of the worst parts of reddit. It could literally be the most innocent person doing absolutely nothing wrong, and someone will come through and say "if the victim hadnt blah blah blah"
Its so gross.
@Crawfish hi from nl mastodon. Testing to verify posting from here works the same as lemmy. Trying to comment on the kbin DT.
@Crawfish woohoo it looks like it works, just a bit slow (makes sense with how loaded kbin.social is right now)
this feature of the fediverse still trips me out! what a concept
