I've recently gotten into buying DVDs instead of streaming things, but the problem that I'm having is that the only DVD player I have is my old Xbox 360 which doesn't support Blu-ray and I don't know if there are better DVD readers nowadays. Just wondering if there was anything I should specifically look for or avoid when shopping for a new player.

What are your requirements?

  • Multiregional?
  • 4k?

The first one was important to me in the UK as you often have to import discs but, if you are in the US it might not be a big deal. It might be worth having anyway in case you run into thr issue down the line.

You should probably go for a 4K Blu-ray player for future compatibility, make sure that it doesn't need an internet connection to work, and check that it works for your region (there are 3 Blu-ray regions)

I can't say for 4K, but for standard and 3D bluray, the PS3 is a pretty cracking all-rounder.
You can get a slim easily for under £100 second hand now.

If you hack them, I think they can be made region free, but I'm not 100% sure if that's just DVD or Blu-ray.

My past couple of players have been Sony ones and if I ever needed another, I'd probably choose Sony again. They have a pretty good range of price points depending on what you need and I think they're typically multi-region too. Your main decisions with them are whether you want the 4k, HDR, WiFi and 4k upscaling features

Tascam BD-MP4K is the model we sell to clients and I've never heard a complaint
