So not bathroom related tasks, but more like some arbitrary thing you must and always do daily.

For me, I watch Anton Petrov's daily white paper summary with dinner since some time in 2018. Even when New Pipe is down, I hit up Vimeo or Odyssey to watch Anton.

I drink coffee on my porch with my wife so we can identify birds and say hi to all the runners and dog walkers.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

This is nice.

Here’s a list of things I used to jerk it to

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I have to find my glasses. If your vision was so bad as mine that you can't find your own glasses, and you're two days out of work because they fell behind the night stand and you can't see to find them, you'd understand..

[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That doesn't sound super optional

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The optional part was whether I wear my glasses while I sleep, as I usually have all my life, or place them on the nightstand..

[–] Githyanki@lemmings.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I thought you were going to say the optional part was the missing work for 2 days rather than wear your spare pair.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I only came across a spare pair like 2 weeks ago, so I totally understand the confusion.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do you have a container on your nightstand to hold your glasses? Something big enough it's unlikely to fall behind the table, that helps position them the same way every time so you won't smudge the lens when you're feeling for them?

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No. That just makes me more likely to lose my glasses. I usually just wear them, 24/7..

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I feel you, dude. Sleep is the only time mine aren't on my face and I keep them grabbable, but I don't want to squish them rolling over in my sleep.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm known to roll around in my sleep. And I've accidentally knocked my glasses off of my nightstand, apparently with my blanket, and couldn't find them for days.

On more than one occasion no less. Do you know how difficult it is to get anyone to help you find your glasses when everyone else thinks you're full of shit?

My vision is like 20/500 without glasses.

I'm sorry your peeps are such assholes. I don't have anyone to help me look, but at least nobody is making it worse. I have a big bright blue box to shut mine in, because if a nighttime earthquake knocked it away I think I could find it by flashlight. (And a flashlight hanging on every doorknob!)

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I do have a bright blue case, but that's where I keep my emergency backup glasses. That stays at home though, every time I lose my glasses seems to be when I'm staying the night at a friend's place..

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Mildly interesting update..

I wish the glasses case was neon yellow instead, because apparently blue is impossible to find in the dark. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Making coffee and tea for my wife when she wakes up, make the lunchbox for my student son, sometimes also for my wife if she needs to get to the office. Nobody eats breakfast so after that I clean up and fill the dishwasher from last nights dinner, that I cook daily. Inbetween I game, relax, make music, pet the cat.

It is nice being early retired and doing the housekeeping.

[–] midimalist@lemdro.id 11 points 1 month ago

I guess you're kind enough to do that.

[–] Lookorex@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I do the crossword every morning with my coffee

[–] Cadeillac@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

You should do it with a pencil in case you make a mistake

[–] Lookorex@lemm.ee 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I like to live dangerously and coffee is much more permanent

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 11 points 1 month ago

Make my bed after waking up.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Eating dinner with family daily. I was talking with some coworkers and apparently this isn’t something most people do anymore? I really enjoy this time with them and we’ve always had great conversations while I was growing up and now with my own family.

[–] midimalist@lemdro.id 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm very interested, would like to have family dinner tradition too when/if I start a family. I just don't have any idea how to start. Can you tell me more how does the routine go? Like, who is responsible for what? Do you cook/buy dinner? What are the do's and don'ts while having dinner? How to enforce it while making sure everyone enjoy this routine? What kind of obligations are okay as an excuse to not participate?

I know it's too many questions, just the gist of it is fine.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It’s more for immediate family in the house. My wife loves to cook so she usually does, unless she’s going to be busy and then I’ll chip in. Sometimes we have the kids make dinner and we meal plan so they get to decide what to make.

Conversation is a lot more organic than you’re thinking. We talk about our day or what we’ve recently learned. Could go into taboo subjects like religion and politics. The kids get some great critical thinking exercises. If someone has something going on then we try to eat around that (ex. like a sports function to be at). Most other people eat around the same time (5p-6p) so it’s fairly easy to ensure we eat together most nights.

I guess the biggest take away is that we set this expectation since before we had kids, my wife and I tried to eat dinner together whenever possible, and the kids have grown up with that routine so they’re used to it.

[–] Pherenike@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Me and my husband do the same. It might seem silly but I can't stress the importance of sharing a meal together enough. It helps teach kids so many things in a shared household.

Open the blackout curtains so the bedroom isn't dark all day. They're only closed while I sleep (or try to sleep, they typed whilst lying in bed in front of closed blackout curtains).

Does the morning coffee count? I'll skip it if I'm being late but I do like my morning coffee.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm going to have to go with Hydrogen on this one.

[–] Diddlydee 7 points 1 month ago

[–] gnu@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Reading the news while having breakfast, though it's now on my laptop instead of the newspapers I started this habit with.

Making dinner for the family. You could always order out.

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

its alarming how nobody has said brushing their teeth yet.

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

[–] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Espresso in the morning. Cappuccino after meal. It's been at least ten years.

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Thanks for the Anton Petrov recommendation. I've been looking for better up to date science reviews, and I was getting sick of the Two Minute Papers channel with its near-constant shilling for Nvidia and OpenAI.

For me, a daily thing I do is sit in my grandmothers armchair, and put my feet up on a small table that also belonged to her, with my laptop on my lap. I realise that sitting is not a super exciting task, but I guess sitting draped in the unconditional love of your deceased grandma's possessions makes it sound a bit better.

I poop IN the toilet

[–] PlexSheep@infosec.pub 1 points 1 month ago

I think there might be an objectively true answer for most (all?) here: wake up.

There might be some all nighters, but besides that, every day for almost everyone starts with waking up, which is also arguably an important part of the daily routine.
