One of Donald Trump's co-defendants in a wide-ranging election-fraud case in Georgia remained behind bars on Friday, after he told a judge that he could not afford a private attorney to represent him and was denied bond.

Harrison Floyd said at his first court appearance that he could not afford a private lawyer and had been denied representation by a public defender because he did not qualify.

Floyd, who appeared virtually, said that it typically cost between $40,000 to $100,000 just to retain a private lawyer to fly to Georgia.

cost between $40,000 to $100,000 just to retain a private lawyer to fly to Georgia.

Are there no lawyers IN Georgia??

Also important to note this guy assaulted an FBI agent and is considered at risk to continue committing crimes, a major reason he was denied bond and is currently in jail awaiting trial

I don't want to diminish what this guy did. But let's remember that people died and were hurt that day as a result of what these 19 assholes did. They all should be in jail without bond.

Don't you have to use a lawyer licensed in Georgia? Maybe he got thrown in jail for being an idiot.

[–] pulaskiwasright@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 year ago

Obviously he got thrown in jail for being an idiot. No other poor person would help Trump.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Seems like there are no lawyers who would want to represent this guy for any less than that.

[–] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 141 points 1 year ago (3 children)

This headline is technically true, but it’s complete bullshit in it’s implications.

The judge said the reason she denied bail is because he is considered a flight risk and a risk for continuing to commit crimes.

Ha, ha. Get fucked traitor.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 52 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You'd think if this was such an outrageous miscarriage of justice, some lawyer would take up the case pro bono.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Heck, even for the publicity.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 36 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He's been hoping Trump or his PAC would hire him a lawyer. But he's probably better off getting an independent Georgia lawyer, without conflicts of interest, who will help him flip for a deal. I'm not sure how Trump et al haven't considered this, not to mention how it looks leaving the black guy in prison.

[–] lagomorphlecture@lemm.ee 22 points 1 year ago

How it looks leaving the black guy in prison? Looks exactly right to their supporters.

That's a big face

[–] Mylemmy@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Guy doesn't own private jet or means to escape the country - denied bail might be a flight risk

[–] BA834024112@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or a risk to continue committing crimes.

[–] Chaser@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 year ago

Yeah, he assaulted the FBI agents serving him also. Law and ordo

[–] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 23 points 1 year ago

Doesn't it more have to do with nobody wants to handle his bond? Seems like he got in a tussle with some FBI folks.

[–] Treczoks@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

One down, 18 to go.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm super curious as to why he didn't qualify for a public defender.

[–] IHeartBadCode@kbin.social 38 points 1 year ago (3 children)

State of Georgia: Qualifications for a public defender are based on personal income. A public defender is typically reserved for those having an income of 125% the poverty line or less in the State of Georgia.

The notion that he requires "out-of-state" representation is likely because his crew (Trump et al.) are trying to railroad a particular counsel for him. The reasons for that can vary, but the rationale aside, the crew seems unwilling to finance representation for him.

The Judge in this case seems unsympathetic to the development, which I would say good. These cretins have routinely abused the judicial system with their unfounded election fraud cases, none of them should be given benefit of the doubt. The more prosecutors splinter the crew, the more likely they'll have someone turning State's evidence.

[–] jasondj@ttrpg.network 36 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Poverty level for a family of four in Georgia is about 27k.

You mean to tel me that an income of 34k for a family of four is too wealthy for a public defender?

In all seriousness, fuck this country.

[–] electriccars@startrek.website 15 points 1 year ago

In what world is $34k not considered poverty levels for a family of 4 in the USA? WTF?

[–] venusenvy47@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Don't you need a lawyer who is licensed in the state? Why would you want to fly in a lawyer from out of state, even if you could afford it?

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Great answer. Thank you.

[–] Entropywins@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because he has money and resources...

[–] elbarto777@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

In other words, he still wanted to suck the government's teat. The party of personal responsibility.
