Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871, was a German socialist politician and theorist. Originally associated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Liebknecht later became a co-founder with Rosa Luxemburg of both the Spartacus League and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht is also known for his outspoken opposition to World War I.

The son of Wilhelm Liebknecht, one of the founders of the SPD, Karl Liebknecht trained to be a lawyer and defended many Social Democrats in political trials. He was also a leading figure in the socialist youth movement and thus became a leading figure in the struggle against militarism.

As a deputy in the Reichstag he was one of the first SPD representatives to break party discipline and vote against war credits in December 1914. He became a figurehead for the struggle against the war. His opposition was so successful that his parliamentary immunity was removed and he was improsoned.

Freed by the November revolution he immediately threw himself into the struggle and became with Rosa Luxemburg one of the founders of the new Communist Party (KPD)

In January 1919, the Spartacus League played a leading role in the Spartacist Uprising, a general strike and armed rebellion in Berlin. The uprising was crushed by the SPD government and the Freikorps (paramilitary units composed of World War I veterans). For their role in the uprising, Liebknecht and Luxemburg were both kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on January 15th, 1919.

Their contributions to European socialism are commemorated annually in Germany during the second weekend of January, an event known as the Liebknecht-Luxemburg Demonstration, or "LL-Demo" for short.

I have finished three episodes of The Sympathizer on HBO. Not expecting much political edge for a corporate-funded show, but so far it has shown surprisingly sympathetic views of the Vietcong & People’s Army.

Will see if that holds up in the next four episodes.

So far it’s been quite entertaining, especially seeing Robert Downey Jr playing four characters

I watched the new Deadpool today. My expectations were pretty low but it was worse than I expected. There were a few actually funny jokes and there is something genuinely clever about the premise, but most of it is cheap fodder and fan service.

No honey, you don't understand! It's my moral obligation to flip off that cybertruck driver!

I'm putting us in danger??? Sweetie that madman is putting everyone at danger just by driving that trash compactor on the highway!

(No spellcheck, I'm not capitalizing cybertruck, go fuck yourself.)

Firefox has been acting up on mobile for me of late. Thought it might have been just hexbear, posts weren't loading, but after clearing some browsing data it started working again. But just a day later now and there are other website that just hang forever. Checked chrome and the same site loaded instantly. So imnlooking for a FOSS browser to replace FF.

Yanks are at it again on twitter saying there are meaningful cultural differences between US states, but all the examples they have are like different speed limits and having a different word for soft drinks, lmao

Earlier, I was out on a walk, and I saw an interesting "in this house we believe" sign. It seemed to be custom made, I saw the logo of a local print shop, in small print in the corner. Basically, the background was white instead of black, and the spots where "black lives matter" and "no human is illegal" were just blank (not covered up, painted over, or anything, just blank as printed). All of the rest of the things were there though.

I guess some liberals have some "beliefs"

Whenever they end congress now the speaker reminds everyone thst Joe Biden is still the president and if he tells them to do something they have to do it and they don't need to check with kamala first. Source: CSPAN

Reading The German Revolution 1917 - 1923 by Pierre Broue right now but it took this megathread for me to realise that Liebknecht had really luscious lips 🀩

Finished the Railroad ending to Fallout 4. Confronting father on his deathbed I stepped out of my Power Armour to reveal Railroad Armour underneath and the same haircut as Glory (RIP). I persuaded him to help me minimize causalities and then put a single bullet into his head from Deliverer. Tommy Whisper and his many dead comrade having their revenge from beyond the grave.

I took the Synth Shaun with me, but I have sent him up to Sanctuary where only Mama Murphy, Macy and Jun Long live in a comfortable if rustic farmhouse. I figure it's a quiet spot for the immortal kid, he's got a cat, a dog and some toys. Maybe a child to look after might healing the Longs too.

Registered to take a drawing class at the community college and having regrets. It's during the day, I'll probably be surrounded by kids (meanwhile I'm 25), its waste of time and money. Might drop it and do accounting or some boring adult shit to actually have career prospects because that's how the world is I guess

[–] Commiejones@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Being around "kids" at 25 isn't too bad and its community college so you might not even be the oldest person there.
