Shame it’s too expensive to live here. I can’t imagine starting today like I did in 2005.
United Kingdom
General community for news/discussion in the UK.
Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.
Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
Am I missing something? How does migration equate to boats?
Migration is people coming into the country, and yes, that's a problem now with Britain not being such an attractive place to be as before
Isn't is interesting that Krishnan Guru-Murthy(Channel 4) went the entire interview without mentioning the small boats and instead was trying to get Khan to call Tories a bunch of racists?
Not sure I should be feeding you but I'll see what happens...how many people do you think come here in small boats?
We need more migrants in the UK (and Western Europe) more generally. We have an ageing population, life expectancy has increased hugely since our state pensions were set up, and the massive post-war baby boomer generation are all retiring and need their pension paid for likely 20+ years of retirement.
The options for paying for all this are either:
-
Make the state pension offering less generous - less money at later retirement ages.
-
Make the younger generations pay taxes through the teeth to fund the boomers through several decades of retirement.
-
Make it easier for ambitious hardworking young people to come to the UK legally to live, work and pay taxes.
The first and second option both raise big problems of intergenerational fairness. The third option seems like a win for everyone involved.
How many migrants you need, Sid my man? I can spare you.... about five 🤣.
