Hi there,

I have decided to take down waveform.social. There are too many nefarious actors trying to break it and I don't have the time or energy to keep fighting them off.

For your information: Over the pas month I have had to:

  1. Add various DDOS prevention measures to block unwanted (repeated) signups.
  2. Delete a bunch of literal white noise uploads that filled my 4TB picture storage... Twice.
  3. Repair Lemmy (or rather pictures) after it crashed because of full storage.

I will keep waveform.social active until Friday next week so you can pull data from here, though I expect most of it has been federated to other servers anyway.

Daaaaaaaamn, my community was just getting some traction. It's crazy people's lives are so devoid of purpose that they choose to spend it attacking a relatively small music-based instance.

Thanks for dealing with it as long as you did. Guess it's time to pack up and move to another instance :/

I knew something must have been happening with the recent sporadic downtime over the past few days.

A shame, but understandable. I’ve enjoyed my time here, thanks for all of your efforts in maintaining the instance!

Thats unfortunate but very understandable. Thanks for your effort!

I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision to make. Thank you for your time and energy up to this point.

I am aware that images aren't loading properly right now. This is because the pictures engine crashed again and I wasn't able to recover it this time.

From one small instance owner to another, I'm sorry that it has come to this for you

Bummer! Thank you for helping me get started with Lemmy, and good luck in your future endeavors!

What am I supposed to do now? I just got acquainted.

Quickly migrate your subscriptions/blocks using a tool like LASIM to a backup acct on another instance.

Thanks for everything. Enjoyed my time here. Keep up the piano, drums, and music!

Is there anything we can do to help?

[–] ChappIO@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Not really. I could host this in a more robust place but the costs would be prohibitive.

Of course, you could let everyone know where you’re going. I might follow too. There’s some talk in this post about a discord server.

What a shame - I had wondered why my Memmy app kept failing to work but if I went via a browser without logging in Lemmy was still up and running.

Thanks for the work you put into this, gutted it didn't really take off, and I wish people would just fuck off with their efforts to break stuff for no apparent reason. Dickheads.

Thanks for setting it up and running it while you could.

thanks for your time! all the best!

Sad to see this community go. lemmy.studio would probably be a good home for those people and communities that still need homes.

Sorry to hear!

[–] doomer@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm sorry to hear that you've had to deal with all of that. I completely understand the decision, though. Thank you for all of the effort you have put into this.

Maybe we could make a community on another lemmy instance, sort of in commemoration? I'm always open for more music communities.

Thank you very much for keeping it active until now! It's not easy to manage a server, so I appreciate your efforts to maintain it and understand how hard it is to do it alone.

See you guys!

It was nice while it lasted, thanks for all the effort you put in!

So, where are you going next? There are at least a few sizeable synth forums out there, and it might be nice if most of us migrated to the same place. I've been back on Reddit a bit, but not sure I want to continue that.

Just a thought - we could start a Discord server. It's not really the same kind of medium, but could still have channels for different topics (music production, synthesizers, etc.) and much easier to maintain I think.

Since we're here, shouldn't we take this opportunity to make a Matrix chat instead? Private, centralized services are iffy. There's good apps too. I like Element but I haven't really tried the alternatives.

[–] Shadowbait@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not opposed to whatever someone else wants to set up, I just mentioned Discord because it seemed like a low-effort solution. The upside to a corporation running it is that DDOS prevention and such are someone else's problem.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm not as familiar with matrix as I am Lemmy, but we could just start a room (or several) on a reliable preexisting server

[–] ChappIO@waveform.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

With the new forum feature of discord this might not be a bad idea.

Let me know if you’ll follow through. I’d probably join.

[–] BareHandedPoopScoop@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Discord is so messy. If you come back after a few weeks or months, it's difficult to get a handle on what's been happening.

This is a shame. I'll look into more robust hosting. How prohibitive a cost are we talking about roughly?

[–] ChappIO@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably around 300 USD a month

[–] inihaw@waveform.social 1 points 1 year ago

thank you 🙏🏽

But why male models?
