Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

"Threat" of small efficient evs that produce less carbon.

"Threat".

Evs aren't even close to a solution to global warming, but normal people think they are. "Threat".

America's ruling class is an existential threat to industrial civilization.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 38 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The threat is to the big line which is all that matters

If it was really their God they'd allow total free trade between all nations without restriction.

[–] CarbonScored@hexbear.net 17 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

True, the free market isn't their god. Just the market that caters for the current members of the bourgeoisie, all else be damned.

Capital is a vengeful demon that must be muzzled and leashed or it will destroy everything in its path.

[–] btfod@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I once ran across an essay describing Capitalism as the manifestation of an evil eldritch god, and... it kinda worked for me. I'll be fucked if I can find a link to it now, though. Just wanted to comment that I agree wholeheartedly

I think it’s a good metaphor for what the state does for capital. Capitalism by its nature destroys cultural signifiers by co-opting them over and over until they become meaningless. It can’t afford to do the things humans have historically done to preserve culture over long periods of time. It needs growth and therefore it needs the speed at which culture transforms to accelerate. It acts a lot like an intrusive species, burning through its food source and destroying the balance of the ecosystem. The state acts like an insulator, slowing this process and making it more sustainable.

Thanks for giving me something to ponder when I'm next at the orb. We need an exterminator instead of a shepherd.

Biden like "I vaguely remember Obama doing something like this right before he won re-election, maybe it'll work for me"

Who am I kidding, he doesn't remember what month it is without an aide

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 37 points 4 months ago

"Threat"

Lmao

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 31 points 4 months ago (1 children)

100% tariff? Aight.

They'll just make it 101% cheaper

[–] Gucci_Minh@hexbear.net 34 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You could in fact double the MSRP of many Chinese EVs due to tarriffs and they would still be a better value than 80% of the trash EVs America and Europe puts out.

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago

You talking shit about my cyber truck? Well I'll have you know I EARNED it by literally sucking Elon's definitely not small penis

[–] SwitchyWitchyandBitchy@hexbear.net 29 points 4 months ago (2 children)

How about we counter the "threat" of Chinese EVs with accessible, comfortable, and fast public transport?

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago

Well that doesn't sound very profit margins! Let's continue relaxing classifications and safety regs on big cars (take a shot every time something is labelled a LIGHT TRUCK to skirt safety rules) and not make anything small or affordable. American dream! biden-troll

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 28 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

It's not just the elcrric vehicles either our entire auto industry depends on not letting companies that aren't dumb as fuck sell cars here.

If those light kei trucks werent outlawed here it would kill of three separate vehicle markets because they're better work trucks than America's trucks, better commuters than an 8 seat suv being driven by one person and they cost a third of our "cheap" cars

[–] waluigiblunts@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

If those light kei trucks were outlawed here

weren't?

Additional context on why foreign small trucks are not present in the American market: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax (25% tariff on foreign light trucks)

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

25% extra on a light truck would still be cheaper than the current monstrosities

must also involve certification like how they have to destroy X of the vehicles in crash testing or something

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

yeah those trucks do exist here. you seem them on occassion and id say they are even becoming a bit more common

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think as long as it's more than 25 years old you can import them

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

ah, so a chinese ev from 1999? yeah, uh, about that

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

oh I thought we were talking about kei trucks. my bad

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

oh i responded but didnt see the context i assumed it was about evs because the messages doesnt show the convo chain i just went off the post title

[–] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 18 points 4 months ago

inshallah let the free hand of the market decide!!!

[–] poppy_apocalypse@hexbear.net 15 points 4 months ago

The economic analysts on BBC went the extra mile to drill into the brain of listeners that this move was NOT protectionism, but political. Biden knows if he wants those Nikki Haley Republicans to vote for him, he has to go hard on China. Also some nuance trolling citations-needed

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 15 points 4 months ago

Tariffs always seem like a pretty limp dick response to me... Especially because they are always enacted by people that jizz themselves at the idea of the free market.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

So...does this mean companies are going to get punished for sending jobs overseas?

Protectionism for me but not for thee

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

only if they deal in those specific products, which they dont, so no

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

GOOD I want a Chinese vehicle

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

Love to see the empire defend the rest of the world leap frogging ahead of us.

[–] toilet_wolf@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 4 months ago

God please let China flood the US with cheap EVs I want one so bad
