Hi all, just wanted to stake out this piece of ground for r/LondonSocialClub. If it becomes necessary to spin this community up in the future, I'll be happy to add existing mods of the subreddit.

Hi all, as someone who founded r/LondonSocialClub (a place for IRL meet-ups in London) along with a few friends many moons ago, the current clusterfuck at Reddit threatens the community where I met my wife and loads of my closest friends.

There is no appetite at the moment for our inclusive subreddit to move off the grid to the fediverse, but I wanted to put a stake in the ground, just in case.

Edit:

I understand why this is bothersome for some people, but I think this is a reasonable action to take:

  • The community name is unique. I don't think it's plausible that another user would want to use this name except to associate themselves with our pre-existing community.

  • This isn't intended to prevent people from starting another community with the same or similar aim. I'd be delighted to see c/LondonMeetups or anything else pop up. I just don't want them to use our name. More people hanging with people is always good.

Otherwise, I plan to stick around this instance. I'm pretty done with Reddit now, and I hope in the future many other people feel the same way.

I'm not sure I agree on your sentiment of staking your claim just in case you might decide to come "off the grid" in the future.

It's a land grab that mean that this community is unmoderated and unmoderatable.

It's a bit like running down at 5am to put your towel on a sundbed, and doesn't seem that social to me tbh.

Ze germans! They are putting down towels!

I kinda agree to be honest, either run this place as a community, or don't run it at all.

What this post is effectively saying is "Hey guys, I'm going to continue to moderate over at another site, please build a community so I can be in charge it if the original one goes tits-up"

It's just not very British is it haha.

The "off the grid" comment got me. If we're lucky they might come and hang with us weirdos.

You clearly do not understand it is bothersome.

If you create a community. You need to ensure it is moded. If you leave a community with no mods watchingn it. And no ability for other to add mods.. You are putting the entire insta ce at risk if others start using it for illegal content.

You are placing a burden on the admin here @tom@feddit.uk to ensure your community dose not break rules. And that is your job.

This community need removing or moding properly.

The community is set to only allow mod posts.

And I am here, if needs be. Although the community is not being actively used, it's not abandoned.

came here with a similar thing in mind. I've started thinking about posting in both places.

Welcome, hope every stays well with LondonSocialClub subreddit and that Reddit don't necessary go tits up more then it has already and force you to abandon the community you set up over there.

I don't necessary agree with parking a community but I can certainly see why you would do it.

I'm currently running the London community over here and I doubt anytime soon that it will be large enough to host meet-ups. On the same token I really don't like using Reddit more then I have to and would really appreciate it if you occasionally link to some of the more larger meet-ups here just to be another place for people to access the meet-ups outside of Reddit.
