Anything with vicarious shame for me.
Anime, the sexualization in it is very uncomfortable to suffer through along with the cringe cliches
I used to like anime and I'm sure there's plenty of series I still enjoy but there was a specific moment that made me stop watching it completely...
My niece loved playing around with those silly Snapchat filters and I clicked on the anime one. Her reaction was really funny but then it hit me...her toddler mannerisms were the same as adult characters in anime. A lot of "hot" characters in anime act like literal toddlers...and people are into that.
It really put me off.
This is a really good comment that I hope all people who make those creepy best girl posts actually go through to understand what their saying is in fact creepy
I was really surprised when it hit me. It obviously doesn't apply to all anime, just the kawaii ones
Same here. Sometimes in anime the fan service becomes horribly gross. Especially if the characters are portrayed to be under age. I’m a big One Piece fan, and my wife started to watch it. But every few episodes she turns to me and I’m like yeah the target demo is 14 year old boys.
Similarly, animation aimed at adults tends to have an awful art style and/or has to "prove" that it's not for kids by being full of juvenile sex jokes and swearing
Amen.
I think discrediting all anime because of the series that do that is excessive. Anime is just a medium to tell a story, not a genre. You could even use cartoon as a synonym. Do all cartoons make you feel the same?
That said, I agree with you that the sexualization in many series is uncomfortable and I don't like it either. And I admit that lately many series (especially those aimed at teenagers) resort to this to gain views. But it's sad when someone discredits the entire medium just because of the series that do that.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
She's just always in a state of implosion and looks like she's going to fuck everything up on stage. It's the most anxiety inducing thing I've ever watched.
Just reading the description of Poor Things was a huge turn off.
"It focuses on Bella Baxter, a fetus in the body of an adult woman in Victorian London who is saved from her mother's suicide via brain transplant and embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery."
It gets worse from there.
Willy Wonka.
I hate the scene juxtaposition, everything feels like the whole filming process was struggling, the long drawn out portrait shots with weirdly sparkling eyes,... Idk. Even thinking about it makes me anxious
And grandpa Joe is the worst person ever playing a good guy in a kid's movie.
I wasn't really allowed to watch Disney movies growing up - at least we didn't have any in the house - which I think continues to shape how I enjoy movies. And cartoons of any sort were pretty much a no go as well. I have gotten a bit more accustomed to animation in recent years, I used to find it impossible to watch, but I still find anything with lots of bright colours and movement a bit much. And I can't stand musicals - they make no sense to me. I want to follow the story, not have to wade through a lot of singing and dancing to get there.
Amen.
Can’t stand anything Tarantino.
The Never Ending Story always made me very uncomfortable. Also, anything with Muppets, except for Labyrinth (assuming those puppets count as Muppets).
I left the theater after Joker absolutely depressed and mentally uncomfortable. It felt less like a fiction and just struck a raw nerve. Similarly, American gothic literature strikes deep and leaves me feeling depressed and hollowed out.
Todd Solondz films. Omg. You think Happiness is bad but then you get hit with Palindromes.
I admire him for it though.
