General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

The UK currently spends 2.32% of GDP on defence.

Had to scroll quite far down the article to find out what the current % is.

Which is higher than the minimum required spending for a NATO country, although some don't spend that much.

UK timelines are hilarious. China will have finished one 5 year plan and then an entire other 5 year plan by then.

They can't even embezzle properly.

In the UK's defence it doesn't have the luxury of simply ordering change to happen.

China: Oh so your house stand in way of glorious five year plan for bullet train connection of country. Fuck you! You no have house anymore!

UK: I'm awfully sorry but would it be possible to draft plans for possibly building a new railway line made up fifteen year old technology to potentially maybe come fifteen miles close to your house? What's that? Oh I do beg your pardon, no I don't want to challenge this in the ECHR. I do apologise. Please allow me to buy you a cup of tea.

That being said, the UK sucks balls at planning and building and I don't think this will now ever improve. We've hit peak UK about twenty years ago in that regard 🥹.

Isn't China famous for building roads around the houses of people who refuse to move out of their houses?

Didn't the UK government force the people on the Olympic site in Stratford to sell their houses dirt cheap?

It's the building part that is key. The UK wouldn't have past the planning stage to get to the part where they build around NIMBYs. And yeah, the hey day of UK infrastructure has past us sadly. The last good thing we did was the Olympics. Ten years ago, in the South in the country.

It also doesn't help if after getting planning permission to build a new railway you then cancel the project because the prime minister is supporting a dipshit.
