Yes this has been asked and answered a million times I’m sure. There is a plethora of ‘top ten distros for Linux gaming’ lists out there and the majority of posts I can find on That Other Site seem to devolve into “every distro can do games”.

I’m interested in what you are using and your experience doing so. Any gotchas you wished you knew? Anything you tried that didn’t work, or anything that worked unexpectedly well? What would you say if your friend asked this over a few pints down the pub?

Most of the following is either via steam proton or linux games on gog:

I used to game on Ubuntu. It worked flawlessly until they switched off of Unity. Ever since I had upgraded, I experienced a lot of lag, like dragging windows was a slideshow. I think it turned out my nvidia drivers were messed up after the upgrade, as at some point I had no choice but to purge all of them, and then things started working much smoother after a reinstall. However, once news came out about the force snap stuff, I decided to switch to Mint. (snap was also causing a lot of problems for me, it filled my drive space (which was super weird, I game and browse the web, not like a power user or something) and they were incredibly slow).

I haven't gamed too much on Mint Cinnamon since switching, but I feel like I sort of regret not trying the Mint XCFE or LMDE editions instead. If anyone has any experience using either with nvidia drivers, would love to hear whether it works or if there are issues.
