We're in 7b. I try to push it out as far as I can get it since we get inconsistent freezes. Been a fairly mild winter all things considered, so I'm willing to send some brassica to its doom to maybe squeeze a bit more out

I have some glass vases that I use for a similar purpose

row cover helps. I'm all about the cold frames, they really extend my growing season, and the greens really like being protected a bit. Onward Into Spring!!!

Nice! I'm actually working on a cold frame for this season, so maybe the random frost won't find me lacking for once. I've beed dreaming of a mini hoop house

I came across Juwel Cold frames 12-15 years ago. They have double wall polycarbonate for the roof and walls, which works great for about 12-15 years. Now some of them are showing signs of wear.

Those look awesome. And very light. I hadn't thought about the little sheet plastics. I have a pile of 3/8" acrylic sheets left over from a job over a year ago that I've been focused on using. Some aluminum angle might be better than what I was gonna do

If you can do a double layer, it really helps the insulation. Also the coldframe has a heat driven auto-opener (like this: https://tulria.com/wp-content/uploads/images/31RGOb9SHwS._SL500_.jpg), so it opens itself when it gets warm inside (in the morning), and closes itself when it cools off in the evening.

Haha, I know how you feel. I'm in 6a (we just got bumped from 6b) so I'll be getting some seeds going over the next few weeks. I've also played the "I hope we don't have a random frost" game. I also have a decent set of grow lights, so I can always keep things indoors if needed.
