Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I'll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.

This is their first non-Nintendo system so I'm a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they're 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)

I bought both at release.

I personally think Microsoft have really shit the bed with the series X. The console itself is great, gamepass is great. Their exclusives at best are some good indies, but all of their AAA first party exclusives have fallen completely flat apart from forza horizon.

If you buy a Sony or Nintendo console you are absolutely spoiled for AAA first party exclusive titles of console selling quality. A friend of mine got a series X recently and asked what games he should get and I recommended only 3rd party titles like dead space, resident evil 4, Elden ring and a few others. All of those are on PlayStation. And PlayStation has insane first party games like spiderman, horizon, god of war, ghost of tushima, death stranding, demons souls, the last of us, uncharted, returnal, ratchet and clank etc.
