Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I'll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.

This is their first non-Nintendo system so I'm a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they're 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)

Xbox with Game Pass hands down.

[–] farfromgrewvn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Only fun box better than Xbox is the female box

[–] Siphtrex@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Neither Xbox nor PS have any compelling argument versus the other. Asking the kiddos which one they want is the safest bet.

PC , huge libraries, high performance and when you're done just alt tab to another window and do your taxes

[–] mint_me@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I mean if you had to choose for kids it’s easy.. Nintendo followed by PlayStation

[–] DaFluff09@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If you get them an Xbox with the Xbox game pass they will have tons of games to play

[–] Pretend_Regret8237@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Go with PS5

[–] memkwen@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If they also having gaming pcs Xbox is probably better. But otherwise would depend on exclusives, most games are cross platform these days

[–] OddballDave@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox has gamepass which is a plus for Xbox. PlayStation has decent exclusives which is a plus for PlayStation. Other than that it's not much different. I suppose which controller you prefer might account for something.

[–] Popularpressure29@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

PS5 is the better choice since you mention in a comment that their friends have a mixture.

[–] MiDiAN00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Get a sega master system or mega drive off eBay. Was the bet for a new console or a non Nintendo one?

[–] T-408@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Literally no good reason to get an Xbox, seriously… PS is the winner by far.

PS has so many incredible exclusives, and almost any Xbox exclusive is available on PC. Not to mention PS VR fantastic

[–] drunkhas@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Game Pass, plain and simple.

[–] Doc-cubus118@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox has gamepass, which has a small monthly cost. That is worth it because it gives you access to a large library of games to choose from to play. And you can earn rewards to get gift cards etc. plus I prefer the controller for Xbox over the PS4/ps5 one

From personal experience- we got an Xbox when my son was 7 and I wish we didn’t. Most Xbox games are oriented towards adults, older kids, teenagers. Most games are shooter games. I would wait until they are older and stick to Nintendo for now.

[–] AlphusUltimus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox series s. Cheap af and game pass gives them tons of games.

[–] levinyl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Imo the game pass is so much better than the PS alternative....

[–] Temporays@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox is much better. The games that are exclusive aren’t worth buying a whole system for imo.

As people are saying. Xbox + Xbox gamespass. But I would say to ask which one their friends have so they can play with them.

[–] TexMoto666@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox. Game pass is $15 a month and saves on the cost of games.

[–] spondgbob@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

So you know, PS5 has a “game pass” similar system where you can play a bunch of PS games throughout it’s history

[–] markaamorossi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

A lot of the multiplayer games kids play today are cross platform, so look at which exclusive they'd prefer to play. The big xbox name that's played today is halo. PS5 has a lot of really amazing single player exclusive, but they're not multiplayer.

[–] RusticSmallTownPost@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Only reason to get Xbox is if you don’t want to deal with pc gaming. At least the other consoles have a reason to exist lol

[–] Virtue330@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

First and foremost you still ask which they want, but if that have no preference then

PS5 if you're interested in their exclusives

Xbox if you're interested in gamepass (£10/month subscription service which includes alot of really fantastic games)

[–] Suitable-Brain7714@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

PS5 has the better games, graphics just better console entirely... and if they ask for a m rated game don't stop them from getting it. it builds character

[–] KingRuzude@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If you’ve kept them on Nintendo since it’s mostly locked down then I’d recommend Xbox, the family safety app works great, limits playing time and can block apps and games too.

[–] UmbraVGG@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Go to a used game store! Get them a PS2 or an Xbox 360. There are SO MANY used games for each of those systems still and for much MUCH cheaper than new consoles.

[–] Fast-Beat-7779@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ps5 to the death of me! Way better console for a long long time!

[–] bonebrah@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I pretty much don't buy xbox games anymore because of gamepass, but I don't know anything about Sony's equivalent offering.

[–] Sleezuschrist1320@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just my opinion but I feel PlayStation has better single player games where the Xbox has better multiplayer

[–] SSLByron@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a recent Detroit transplant, this thread put a smile on my face. Has certainly been fun watching the Lions this year. Pulling for them—and your kiddos!

[–] monolith_blue@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

One of those preprogrammed mall knovk-offs that has 1000+ games on it.

[–] Sham_y_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As many others have said, depends on what the friends have so the kids can play together.

But outside of that, PS5 is the better console with the better games.

[–] grendelone@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ask them what most of their friends have/play.

[–] Huze17@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What their friends play, that is way more important imo. Sony has the better exclusives but that means nothing when all your friends are playing together and you are left out.

[–] bigshot316@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Gamespass would be the deciding factor for me.

[–] hydro_agricola@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

"lost a bet"

[–] Bardivan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

just get a ps5

[–] Dark-Knight-Rises@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Lurkingdrake@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Xbox Series S with gamepass. Best bang for your buck, imo.

[–] IDF-official@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

rather than asking your kids what they want you ask reddit??

[–] iWr4tH@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’ll toss a vote for xbox because of bias. I don’t know what the parental controls are like on PS5. But on the xbox it’s an extension of whatever you have setup on a windows PC.

I have it setup that the girls only get an hour on school nights and 2 hours on weeknights and i don’t need to be there to enforce it.

[–] KoreN-@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

ps5 just for the sake of bloodborne and demons souls

[–] Gnomorius@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Jrod_9784@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

First off.. whatever their friends have, second, Xbox.. I’m a ps5 primary user but also have an Xbox, if I wasn’t rooted in ps5 I would switch to Xbox just for the “free” games

[–] BoonScepter@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Build a PC that's 10 times faster than either for the same price and get a subscription to PC gamepass

[–] arneeche@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

the bigger consideration is the type of games they play and if you plan on getting a gamepass or psplus subscription. Those will open up many games and each has their own list of included games.

[–] droideka75@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What kind of games do you make?

[–] hatinsidecat@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Get them a Sega Dreamcast.

[–] tehnoodnub@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I know nothing about NFL so can't judge how likely it was for Detroit to make the playoffs but this reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where a guy bets Elaine that Dustin Hoffman is in Star Wars and the loser has to buy the winner dinner.

OP: oh no... I need to buy my kids a console... and I'll definitely play it. Damn...
