Clean your apartment, don't leave food around and you won't see many roaches.
I've lived in Asia for years and I rarely saw roaches
The problem isn't your apartment, it's everyone elses' that live around you. I first saw roaches when I moved to Korea, my apartment was spotless, my neighbors' not so much. I would open drawers in my desk and they would be crawling around. No food anywhere to be seen. Didn't matter. At least they were small. Now I deal with 4 inch long behemoths in a warm climate at least once every few months. I swear you can hear them breathing.
Yes indeed if you live in a big condo, your apartment can have roaches, even if it's clean, if other tenants keep theirs dirty. It happened to me in Gramercy Residence in Manila for example, the receptionist told me they routinely spray the entire building but if people keep their apartments dirty, roaches and other insects eventually return.
So, in big condos, especially if not new, you can find roaches even if you're clean. But despite this, I rarely found them...maybe I got lucky.
If somebody is very scared by roaches, he/she can spray the perimeter of his apartment with an anti-roaches spray so they don't get scared
