Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Shazam's usefulness come from its enormous database of fingerprinted music and not the fingerprinting software it uses to create it? I'm sure you could find FOSS that fingerprints music, but it would be useless without a gigantic database to search.
Musicbrainz is such a database, but I am unsure whether it can be used with short snippets of music.
I don't think they store fingerprints. They only use MBID for metadata.
My bad, I was thinking of AcoustID.
