There have been many rumours over the years (many many rumours) but this seems pretty definitive that we'll see a lot of James Cameron's films make it to 4k this year. This screening has to be part of the launch event.
Well, you must have heard producer John Landau recorded on video at an Avatar event stating that Avatar, Titanic, True Lies and The Abyss will be released on physical media.
So far we've had one, Avatar.
Unless you go to Amazon Spain and pickup the True Lies bootleg which I believe is sourced from the D-VHS transfer with a few filters applied to tidy up the picture a little.
It's in the link I gave.
He seems pretty unequivocal - it's happening and it's happening this year. So that Abyss screening is likely to be 4k. I'll be keeping an eye on developments as I'll be all over an Abyss release.
Sorry, I didn't notice the link.
I love this film. I first watched it on Channel 4 one Sunday night. Then I found out about the special edition VHS and bought that on launch day. I was later bummed out to discover there was a limited edition dual VHS box set that contained Under Pressure: The Making of The Abyss.
I was also annoyed that the rat scene was butchered with lower-quality alternate takes and even the wrong aspect ratio. I think the BBFC wanted that scene cut because of a complaint from the RSPCA.
I almost bought the PAL laserdisc (which also had Under Pressure) but I never did and I can't remember why. Maybe it was too expensive.
Then of course I imported the US DVD on pre-order and that is where we have all been waiting since 2000.
There are however a couple of HD streaming rips out there. One theatrical and special edition which claims to be open matte.
You do enjoy buying multiple copies! 🤣
That's only twice! 😆
