In the UK you can only buy a maximum of 32 at a time over the counter. So doctors often prescribe larger amounts.

Also in the UK prescriptions may be free for a patient, so a doctor may definite prescribe over the counter medicines to ensure access.

Yeah, not sure about everywhere else, but here apparently pharmacies don't have the 60-tablet Aspirine-caffeine because it requires a prescription to be able to buy it, while they are allowed to sell you 5 or more 30-tablet packs otc... 😂
