reminds me, I heard this older comedian do this bit 30 years ago, about how being a kid back when parents smacked their kids, was all about understanding which zone you were in and using it to your advantage.

the 3 zones:

the hit zone. this is when you are close enough for an adult to hit you directly. lots of rules in this zone.
the grab zone. this is just outside the hit zone. in this zone the adult can grab you and pull you into the hit zone. lots of rules in this zone too.
everywhere else on the planet is "free space" where there are no rules.

adults use trickery to confuse us, but the tell tale sign you are in "free space" is when an adult is pissed at you and says, "don't you run from me."
