I can't put into words how amazing the comics are. I generally suck at getting people to try things, but I'm telling you, do yourself a favor and read them. I am not a comic guy; the medium usually falls flat for me. But holy crap the Sandman comics are literal works of art, and the stories they tell are so unique; I'd often find myself having to take several moments after finishing one, just sitting in silence... processing.
I think the first season of the show covers the first 3-4 volumes, and they mostly nailed them. Very little is cut out or changed, and anything that is, is usually done with good reason, such as updating things from the 1980's to the 2020's.
It makes me really conflicted to hear the allocations about Gaiman. If there was ever something that deserved to have the art separated from the artist, it's the Sandman comics. I like to think they have grown much bigger than one man, but maybe I'm just trying to justify my inability to see them as tainted. It just feels that to hide them away due to the actions of the author, taken years after he created them, would be a terrible loss. Perhaps that's what makes Gaiman's actions all the more betraying.
I wanted to say, I justed downloaded the first volume of the Sandman comic from my local public library. Free if people want to try public libraries!
They got other volumes and I'll be sure to read them when I finish up my Red Rising read.
