He had connections before he was even born lol. Look up his mother, Ann Dunham (who met his father at a Russian language class in Washington in 1960 during the height of the Cold War) and her working for USAID in 1960s Indonesia.
His stepfather Lolo, whose military career in Suharto’s army during the Indonesian massacre of 1965-66 where over a million people were accused of being communists and murdered had been completely scrubbed on Wikipedia. He was summoned back in 1966 (although the actual date is under dispute and probably completely scrubbed at this point) to serve under Suharto, when the killing season took place.
There have been rumors for years that Lolo was one of the many CIA/Pentagon trained Indonesian military officers who would later carry out the Jakarta Method in Indonesia (although Vincent Bevins, author of Jakarta Method, disputes this and simply said there is no hard evidence to prove this).
