I recently struggled through installing the first alpha on a virtual box setup and unfortunately after all that, the desktop wouldn't ever load. It seemed to get stuck in a loop trying to initialize the video mode. I may wait until it's at a beta state to try again because that was a letdown. I'm hopeful this DE is what they're hoping to achieve eventually! And I understand alphas aren't going to be stable I just really wanted to play with it!
If you're primarily interested in trying it just to see what it's like, you may have more luck by putting it on a USB stick and booting that rather than using a VM. It would likely give you a better idea of how it runs/performs on your hardware if you're considering it as a native desktop OS.
