seems like the trade off that's already here is this:
blue collar/trade: destroy your body, potentially good pay but it varies wildly, expect to work 50-70 hr weeks, great job security in your field (better with union)
white collar/office: save your body (but destroy it in other ways), good pay generally compared to labor put in, 40-45 hr weeks, extremely precarious job security, expect long periods of unemployment
i used to get jealous of hearing every redditor complain about their coding job, my options were taken from me so it's a bit of bitterness, but now it should just be

Yeah it seems that blue vs white collar thing really tries to drum up that resentment that you described. Classic divide and conquer.
